Gibson Les Paul BFG dilemma

Re: Gibson Les Paul BFG dilemma

I wanted to thank everyone again for their great advice and help concerning my query as to which pup to replace that crappy BB3 with. And I'm probably gonna get a lot of WTF tags and haw-haw's on this but I have installed a DimeBucker in the bridge. I know I said earlier that I wasn't crazy about how thin and crappy it sounded to me in my co-guitarist's Jackson Kelly (who also plays through a Randall solid state head, using a distortion pedal for his dirty tone) but I will briefly explain the scene. Yesterday, I was doing more research on SD pups and just for schits and giggles, I went on Craigslist to see if there was anyone selling SD pups and sure enough, there were many listed but not the Custom or Distortion. So anyway, some fellow that lived nearby my area (I live in Brownstown, MI which is 18 mins. downriver from downtown Detroit) and he was selling a like-new Dimebucker for $40. Everyone else were selling their used Invaders and Full Shreds for like $70-80, which is a rip off because that's how much they sell for new. So being on a very tight budget, I decided to take a chance and get the Dimebucker because I figured A: the price was affordable, B: anything is better than this piece of $hit BB3 and C: I could always replace it with another pup later when I get a bit more coin to get something else. Well long story short, I was very pleasantly surprised. It sounded great through the 6505+ and balanced well with the stock P-90 in the neck. I can't put my finger on why a Dimebucker sounded great in my Les Paul whereas my co-guitarist's DB sounded like a bag of unwashed ass in his Jackson but in any case, I am happy I gave it a go, especially with something I never would have considered trying in the first place. And for those that are dead set on dissing them, well, I guess it doesn't matter since I am quite happy with the sound and that's all the matters.

Thanks again, everyone!

Re: Gibson Les Paul BFG dilemma

Can you describe the bag of unwashed ass tone in more detail? Chewy mids? Saggy lows?

Re: Gibson Les Paul BFG dilemma

I like lower output pickups for metal. It's easier to add gain to sound than it is to take it away.

I'd play with the height of the polepieces.

Re: Gibson Les Paul BFG dilemma

I'd take a leaf out of Tom Sholtz' book. Stock P-90 neck/rhythm, DiMarzio Super Distortion bridge/treble. No sissy coil splitting.

Re: Gibson Les Paul BFG dilemma

If the P90 isn't working out, you could put a mini humbucker in the neck. That'd cut the hum and give more power in the neck. Truthfully, I don't think a mismatch is necessarily bad, but you do have to play with height and know each pickups' strengths. A P90 used for single note passages or solos sounds great while the Dimebucker provides the aggressiveness for your rhythm.

Re: Gibson Les Paul BFG dilemma

Thanks, everyone! I'm definitely leaning towards the Custom or the Distortion. So far, every review about the Blackout Modulator Preamp was a mixed bag ranging from spectacular to downright awful so I think actually replacing the BB3 is the way to go at this juncture. It's just strange how I have to dime the Low, High, Resonance and Presence controls and my Pre-Amp gain is up to 7 and it's still falls short of metal face-melting satisfaction. I am also beginning to think that the 6505+ might need to be checked out because while it is certainly loud enough, the overall tone, even with my LP that has Blackouts, sounds really farty to me.

I think that might be the problem right there. When was the last time you had your power tubes changed? If you're cranking the Master Volume too, power amp tubes will only last about six months to a year.

You might also want to check some different brands of preamp tubes as well. Each manufacturer's 12AX7 has different tonal characteristics. You might find that changing one or two will get you closer to the response you want.

Re: Gibson Les Paul BFG dilemma

I play Megadeth style metal with anything: vintage tele singles, p90's, antiquities but also the invader and x2n. It depends so much on your amp. the 5150 is notorious for being a bit fizzy. I modded mine and now I can't part with it. Supersimple mods but so useful. That way you can tame the highs a bit. anyway....

super Distortion in a les paul, a hollowed out les paul? no. mush mud bath galore. I'd go with something that has less output to make it tighter (Pearly gates springs to mind) or something with a bit more bite to make it tighter (fullshred) or something balls to the walls, like the PATB1 or PATB2. though the patb1/2 is the best pickup in a hollowed out LP hands down.
