Gibson Les Paul Classic Custom Guitar Of The Week?

Well I've had another trade offer on my Gretsch that I am thinking over....

It is a (2007 I believe) Gibson Les Paul Classic Custom Ebony, one of Gibson's Guitars Of The Week models. It looks like a sweet guitar, but my only issue is that it has had a headstock repair... The guy that owns it said that a few years ago it fell of the stand and got a crack in the headstock (not a full break but cracked). It was taken to Guitar Source, in Kansas, to be repaired on the same day that it was cracked. He said that it has been 3 years since it was repaired and that it is rock solid and there has been zero movement.

My main concern is, how much will the repair effect the value of the guitar and would it be an even trade? This trade offer is off of another forum, so I would not be able to see it in person to check it out first, before making the trade. The guitar has the stock 57 Classic in it and he said he would also include a Duncan JB and a Dimarzio PAF Pro with it too.

So what do you all think? Should I consider it or pass? And would you get this or the '93 Gibson Lucille that I have also been offered, from another guy?

Here are the few pics that he sent me...

Wood glue forms a stronger bond than the wood itself, so no worries about stability issues there. I'd say Gibsons with repaired headstocks are a steal because they are as stable if not more stable for DIRT CHEAP because of the repair.

Never trust a dude who photographs his guitars naked. Who knows what else he's done to it naked.

Wel that's what I'm getting at though... with it being repaired and all, I don't know if it would be worth it to trade my nice Gretsch 6120 for it...

LOL! Yeah I saw that... haha! I just hope that he was only missing his shirt. Lol

I don't think so. Cracked headstock is bad.

Let's see the Gretsch 6120 again.

Is it the Brian Setzer Hot Rod?

But a well repaired one is ok....thats the key issue here -what is the quality of the repair.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Classic Custom Guitar Of The Week?

I wouldn't trade it straight. I would believe it to be solid sure (I repaired a cheap epi SG with a completely off almost 90 degrees break with only glue and the guy is still rockin' it a year later with zero problems), but IMHO, it's not the same value as your very clean Gretsch. Try to get him to throw some cash in as well if you're really interested. How much? I really don't know, others will be better at estimating this than I am.

That's just me though.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Classic Custom Guitar Of The Week?

The'd probably decrease in value, but I can tell you from my own experience - I never noticed any difference in sustain or tone whatsoever from my guitar before I cracked the headstock and after the repair. It's really just about making sure it's professionally done.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Classic Custom Guitar Of The Week?

Neck repair makes it worth anywhere from $700 to maybe $1000 TOP DOLLAR. Lot's of people ask more for LP's with headstock repairs, but they aren't worth it. Call any shop and see what they tell you it would be worth. Your Gretcsh should bring around $600 to $800 more than that LP is worth with the neck break. I have seen those model Gibsons without any breaks or repairs going in te $1400 to $1600 range.

As for the actual model, they look good, but I think they have the chabered body. I had one of the other Classic GoW's and I hated the tone of the chambered body compared to a regular LP style weight relief body.

Oh I didn't know you were trading it for your nice guitar (didn't see first sentence). In that case don't trade, and offer only cash/check/whatever. I'd say offer $600 and see where it goes from there. Mention that your offer is probably the most he'd ever get for it, as I've seen $4000 LP Customs with the break have to be sold for $500.

I was just about to say something about that.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Classic Custom Guitar Of The Week?

I don't think it's a straight trade in value for the Gretsch so don't do it.

:33:

Well - that sure gives a new meaning to the term "Gut Shot"

Re: Gibson Les Paul Classic Custom Guitar Of The Week?

You get nailed on the resell. A real high-end luthier could have made this easy repair entirely invisible (by re-floating the lacquer and fixing it back up to be smooth).

This is at least a 25% deduction. And in addition to that you will have to wait much longer for a buyer.

Plus as people pointed out, this guy doesn't strike me as the neat personality you want as a previous owner for a car.
