Gibson Les Paul Classic: Good or Bad?

Re: Gibson Les Paul Classic: Good or Bad?

Everyone has to keep in mind that the OP is in Canada where we tend to get shafted on US made stuff. if those guitars are 3 years old, when they were bought, the Canadian dollar could have been worth about 60 cents US. The last time I saw a new one locally, it was $2400 Canadian, so at $1800US it's not terrible, but not great either.

If they've been hanging around for a few years, $1600US would be an acceptable price IMO.

I love the Classics because they don't have that baseball bat for a neck like the VOS models and the standards seem to have. THey remind me a lot of my 1979 "The Paul"...

Re: Gibson Les Paul Classic: Good or Bad?

I have a 2003 Classic and I love it. But the FIRST thing I did was change out the stock pups for an Alnico II Pro set. I have small hands, so I like the thin neck.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Classic: Good or Bad?

For that price have you checked out the Standard Traditional Pro? I like this newer model better than the old Classics. Better pups, coil splits; and plek'ed frets...

Re: Gibson Les Paul Classic: Good or Bad?

Yeah they were. The classics are chambered, have hot pups, thin necks, plain tops, and those snot green inlays. Ive only played one since I live in the middle of nowhere, and I loved it! It was the prettiest honeyburst Ive ever seen! the inlays are an aquired taste I guess...

Depending on the years they may not be chambered. Chambering started in October of 2006 (all Classics from 2007 and 2008 were chambered). The Classics were discontinued at the beginning of this year and replaced by the LP Traditional Pros.

I say if you can't afford a Custom Shop Reissue then buy another brand! Custom Shop is the only place real Les Pauls are being made anymore and even those aren't worth the green IMHO!

I would be willing to try a Carvin California Single before I shell out the bucks for a non Custom Shop LP. The Gibson Reissues are nice but the Carvin could possibly even beat those! IDK maybe someone can offer an opinion on that idea!

I like 50's neck Stds the most, but if you're seriously shopping for a new LP, listen to Tattooed Carrot and Lex666 - the new LP Traditional Pro. You can buy that guitar and not change a thing. They got everything right on that guitar.....well except it only comes in a 60's neck.

It's a way better guitar than the 90's Classics, and cost the same.

I have one, it sounds great even unplugged. I played about 30 LPs to find that one. Mine is not chambered.

Yeah but those that aren't chambered are still swiss-cheesed.

I thought cave-for-homeless-guy style chambering of Les Pauls started in 2005?

I have an 04 Classic with SD Alnico 2 Pro's. It sounds and plays fantasticly. Its the best Gibson I've played . I'm going to fit some Phat Cats.I like P90's ,although the Pro 2's are great.
