Gibson LP question..

Is $1195 a decent price for a used LP standard ? Approx 1995 model, just below excellent condition.
Bud is eyeing one and Im kinda on the fence on how to advise him. Told him to get a new studio, but he feels the standard would be a better deal. The standard sounds better than almost any Ive ever played.. Just has mojo

Re: Gibson LP question..

The studios and older standards sound kind of alike. THey have the same woods and pick ups. minus the binding. If your friend plans on reselling that guitar one day gof or the standard. If the guitar is not in bad condition i say go for the staadard as well. But the studioisnt a bad choice either if the standard is in such a condition that it is not worth buying.

Re: Gibson LP question..

I would go with the standard if the standard is in good condition. You could get a studio for about the same price but, it will depreciate. I always prefer buying good condition used guitars over new ones.

Re: Gibson LP question..

That's a great deal on a Standard if it's in good conidition. Standards hold their value a lot better so I'd always go with one over a Studio, if he were to ever sell it.

Re: Gibson LP question..

Depends on the particular guitar. For example my 95 LP standard killed a flame top 01 R8 that I bought. That's why I sold the R8!

You gotta either play the guitar, or trust the ears and experience of the seller. ;)

You can get exc. cond. used Studios for about half that. Look at 'em on ebay going for around $650 all the time. I love mine.
If your friend can do without the trim, the Studio is the same as a Standard as far as wood, construction, playability, and sound are concerned...IMHO.
But if he's set on buying a Standard, $1195 is a pretty decent price....especially if it has a nicer finish.

Re: Gibson LP question..

Its black. Really good shape. very minor wear marks both body and frets. Just a couple lil nicks in the binding. Very full tone in the mids. Played a 02 classic back to back and the classic muddied out playing chords like A and barre chords on the same amp settings.
Also played a studio, but the studio they had there was the thin body years and was yellow (white when new) from years of smoke.
He would rather get a good studio for less so he can get an amp too, but the standard seems a good deal. We are both leary to buy off ebay...

BTW, $1195 includes the case and the dealer is waiving sales tax.

Not a bad deal for the Standard, but the Studio is no slouch either. I got my 2000 Alpine White Studio Limited Edition in mint condition w/ case for $800.00. Threw in a set of Duncans and a TonePros bridge/tailpiece and I'm still under $1,100.00!
