Gibson LP/SG Custom discontinued?

Re: Gibson LP/SG Custom discontinued?

Did Gibson drop it from the new line up? What jackasses if they did. They've added a few new models that don't look that exciting (IMO)

Wouldn't have bothered me. I never liked 3 humbuckers in a guitar anyway. That middle bucker always seems to get in the way.

Re: Gibson LP/SG Custom discontinued?

My original point was that the original white, 3-pickup SG/LP Custom is such an iconic guitar. It's too bad they dropped it. I understand the $$ issue. That wasn't my point

Iconic? How? I only know of one person who played one consistently and that was Sister Rosetta Tharpe! I know Jimi played one & there is video of him doing so but he fought that guitar trying to make it work (you can see it in the video) I know Les Paul played one as well as MAry Ford, but I think they played them because Gibson gave them to each. Again I think that middle pickup seemed to always be in the way. I would much rather have a Standard or a Custom with two pickups....

I know what you're getting at Dave, but to me it's always been an iconic image, maybe not like a '59 Burst or the regular SG, but it's always been there.

P.S. Yes, I agree three pickups are a pain, but they look cool, like on the LP Custom or Firebird VII

Iconic for sure!

Glen Buxton From the Alice Cooper Group used one, that alone gives it Rock Guitar God status, c'mon Dave step up your game haha!

Yeah, I have no doubt Gibson will reissue them again. They usually wait till something's been missed for several years, then bring it back........with a big price tag.

We're actually fortunate that Gibson has placed a priority on SG's in recent years. They've come out with some good models, especially the new Standard, which finally mates a 50's neck with a 60's teardrop pickguard. I always hated the bat wing pickguard with high sitting crooked pickups mounted in it.

Was going to say; they'll probably bring it back after a while. Still kind of a bummer because I always liked the looks of the Custom more. Oh well, there is always the used market, where Customs can be as low as $2K.

Re: Gibson LP/SG Custom discontinued?

Gibson has gone down the dark path of believing that their $h!t is diamonds. They will be forever charging more and more for fewer and fewer guitars in an attempt to get the ultra profits they feel they deserve in spite of what the market has told them. There are a very few people who can force the market that way. Premium Musical Instrument makers are not one of them.

They will end up one little old luthier of middling skill and a corporate office of hundreds charging 100,000 for each of the ten Les Paul Customs they make a year.

They would stop charging the prices if people would stop paying it. The problem is there are plenty of people who cant seem to get enough of 5K+ Les Pauls
