Gibson Metal Cleaner?

I came across a restoration kit from Gibson at my local store & noticed there is a bottle of metal cleaner as a part of that kit.

I have a nickel bridge on my PRS SE that is quite oxidised over the years, being closer to the beach can be a bad thing sometimes lol Anyways, I have had decent luck with WD40 for getting it somewhat clean but would like to know what the Gibson thing is like.

Any one use it on their bridges? Did it work better than expected?

Re: Gibson Metal Cleaner?

I really don't have an answer but I doubt that the metal cleaner is some proprietary blend specifically made for Gibson. It's probably just an already available metal cleaner that Gibson selected to be packaged for them. I've got a guitar with nickel plated hardware that's tarnished or oxidized pretty badly. Rumor was that the new hard case was giving off some chemical fumes that tarnished the plating. No matter what metal polish I've used, it will shine it up a little bit and get it looking better but I cant get the dull haze out of the finish. It's permanently tarnished, oxidized or whatever the case. Point being, I don't think I would buy the kit just for the little bottle of metal polish. Also, for cleaning metal that isn't tarnished, I usually just grab the guitar polish. If I need to use something more abrasive, I'll use Mothers or something like that.

Not helpful but amusing ... I've seen that 3 product Gibson kit on Amazon and I remember reading a negative review for it. The reviewer gave it a poor rating because it didn't fix the finish checking on his guitar. I thought that was pretty funny when I read it.

Yeah ^it would be a polish and cutting compound of sorts sold at the price of snake oil

That's what I was suspecting lol

I wouldn't buy that kit for just the metal cleaner, but was wondering what kind of stuff is in it. The price wasn't too bad though, close enough to the planet waves kit. I did get the PW kit since it was readily available near me, still haven't bothered using it though.

WD40 does help out a bunch to take the greenish pigments out, but not that effective if its going blackish. I guess using it on monthly basis or even weekly once the oxidation signs start to be first visible, is the ideal way for it to be effective.
