Gibson owned by Guitar Center?

From a very reliable source, I heard a rumor that Gibson is currently owned by Guitar Center and the word "QC" is a joke in Gibson nowdays.

Yes, this is just a rumor but I thought I should share this with bros since they might jump in and buy new Gibsons.

To say that Gibson was owned by GC, would be like saying that Jaguar was owned by Ford, or Lamborghini owned by Chrysler. :laugh2:

As of their last conference call a few days ago, GC owns Musicians Friend, American Music, and recently acquired Music and Arts. Ah, rumors...... a good one though!

The correct rumor was that the parent company that owns GC and MF was supposedly going to buy Gibson, but some bros in-the-know in the business world confirmed it's all BS, not happening. It's actually been discussed quite a bit on various forums.

That rumor has been floating around for months now. GC has money, but they ain't got THAT money. They have been opening too many stores to be buying up a compnay like Gibson.

I believe it's correct to say they own Gibson in the sense that they throw enough money at them to get things they way they want, but they don't literally own them.

GC is a publicly traded company, their annual report for 2004 is online in PDF format. The text in their report niether mentions Gibson nor Fender.
What I find interesting is the 2004 Net sales numbers
MF ~ $173 million dollars
GC retail ~ 1162 million dollars
Looks like most people want to touch that instrument before buying it.

So unless Chrysler has bought VW, something's wrong. :smack:

Back to Gibson, the overall sense of your remark sounds right to me AT. What would it change anyway, plus the fact that underlined TC. If it can make Gibson lower their price... go for it !!!

Chrysler owned Lamboghini in the 1980's. I might be mistaken, but I seem to remember the Lamborghini F1 engine having the pentastar on it's cam covers.

My belief is that Gibson has been trimming back retailers because they're planning on becoming their own franchise in the same way that Harley Davidson, Starbucks, Wilson's Leather, and other 'high ticket item' companies have done. They'll just put up Gibson stores in all the high profile tourist areas, and do a lot of mail order.

That's my theory anyway. Everything they've been doing lately leads to that conclusion.
