Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

SGs are definitely the coolest looking guitars ever, nothing comes close. I've just been fondling my 63 Junior which is the best guitar I've ever played. If somebody offered to buy me any 10 guitars of my choice they would all be SGs. Actually, better make that 20.

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

my favorite thing about you, besides not being sure how to pronounce your screen name so i just imagine it a a noise an emu would make, is that you can always find one tiny detail about something that totally ruins it for you.

Keep in mind that there's an art to being able to do this, that many don't seem to appreciate. Plain old guys like me are much easier to please.

uOpt = Micro-Optimizations

"useless micro-optimizations" actually.

It's what I do all day long at work :). They pay me to nitpick, sometimes it splashes over to hobbies. In particular if I'm posting while "my code is compiling".

Good man. When I hear people say they don't like SG's, I'm baffled. What is their problem? Lack of taste or intelligence?

haha you can sort of tell..! it's an admirable trait tho, as i am somebody who is known for overlooking the details and painting in broad strokes.

now if you'll excuse me i have to go turn my amp up all the way.

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

The batwing pickguards are very annoying.

while i normally agree, more out of functionality than anything, i think i like it better on the classic. what always annoys me about the batwings is that it makes the pickups sit at an unnatural angle, but all the classics or SGs with P90s in general ive seen don't do this. perhaps the P90s are just less angular or large than regular humbuckers, making them sit at the proper angle.

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

Well, the other thing that isn't so great about the batwings and humbuckers is that the bridge humbucker sticks out very far. Depending on individual neck angle, of course, but almost always it looks odd. P90s with their round tops are more pleaseant to look at in that position.

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

The batwing pickguards are very annoying.

They look nice on some SG models (for variety if nothing else), but changing PU's & magnets becomes a bigger project than it should. Once you're done though, you don't have to deal with taking it apart again and can enjoy it. The annoyance factor goes away.

As far as PU angle, that's a shortcoming of batwings. PU rings are slanted towards the neck, so with an angel wing pickguard the PU's follow that same angle. With a batwing, the PU's are screwed into a flat pickguard, so there's nothing to tilt them.

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

Diving Neck Syndrome?

I've never experienced that on any of the Gibson SGs I've played. On the other hand several Les Pauls I've played have been unbalanced sitting down as the neck tends to fly up due to the heavy back end. IMO it's easier to balance a guitar that neck dives because in most cases where I've encountered it the slightest pressure of your forearm resting as it would in a normal playing position is enough to keep the guitar where it should be.

I've never had a problem with SGs and neck-diving either. I don't doubt it happens; I merely mean it hasn't happened to me. I take it as yet another indication that the SG is ideally suited to my frame, hands and ears. I consider myself lucky to have found it.

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

I've been checking these out for awhile and I'm dangerously close to "buy-it-now-frenzy": Gibson SG Classic

GuitarCenter/musiciansfriend has current stock, even though gibson no longer officially lists them as available. Any fans of the classic out there? They sound pretty sweet to me.

How about a classy/tastefull LP-shaped guitar with some P90's ?

OHHhhhh, the GAS :argh:

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

^^ That is true

BUT ONLY A FOOL CHANGES THE STOCK PICKUPS IN AN SG CLASSIC! ! ! ! !

:D

There is no "need" to change out a pair of perfectly good Gibson P-90's. However, that thing just screams for a set of Duncan Hot P-90's!

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

ah yea, count me in for a nice gibson sg classic thread. bought mine back in 2005 when they could be had for $650! love everything about the guitar: tone, looks, and feel. and it satisfies my pete townshend live at leeds fetish. BUY IT.

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

Phil, I sincerely think if it's something you're interested in, you should go ahead and get one sight unseen.

I can't dude, I don't trust gibson enough. I have played so many terrible guitars with flaws in which I would not invest 200$.

One day a good standard of 61ri will come my way.

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

it would be great to see townshend come out with an SG for the who's superbowl halftime gig. but i'm not holding my breath.

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

Wow, lots of fans of this guitar... I'm going to try and see if I can find one in stock at GC, I really don't like buying any guitar sight unseen/unplayed. I'm also trying to decide if I will trade in my faded SG on it, if I do find one I like, or if I'll just keep it and have two SG's.
