Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

Well, the other thing that isn't so great about the batwings and humbuckers is that the bridge humbucker sticks out very far. Depending on individual neck angle, of course, but almost always it looks odd. P90s with their round tops are more pleaseant to look at in that position.

I mounted angled pickup rings on my Special's pickguard.

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

Wow, lots of fans of this guitar... I'm going to try and see if I can find one in stock at GC, I really don't like buying any guitar sight unseen/unplayed. I'm also trying to decide if I will trade in my faded SG on it, if I do find one I like, or if I'll just keep it and have two SG's.

An HB & P-90 SG...now that's a nice pair.

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

This thread has given me my first GAS attack of 2010.

Go for it RLee! :naughty:

And keep the HB one too!

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

Played with one of these SG classics today at GC, and really liked the feel and the tones it was putting out. Neck felt great, the binding was very well done. The one thing I didn't like about this particular floor model was the finish -- it looked like it left the finishing shop too early. The SG special, right next to it, had a nicer finish, buffed out nicely, but the classic finish (which is, afaik, supposed to be equivalent) was much thinner, uneven, and not buffed out nearly as well. I think it was just that specific guitar (hopefully). But, on the bright side, the important stuff -- playability/tone/feel -- was great.
I'll just keep my eyes open for one with a better finish.

That finish problem definitely is particular to the guitar you played, not the model in general. The finish on my SG Classic is quite beautiful.

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

It seems like an awesome axe. The only thing that bums me out is that its a 1k guitar...with no hardshell case. WHat the hell?

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

i really like these

what would be the differences in tone and feel between one of these and a PRS SE soapbar II (25" scale) ? ... between one of these and a prs mccarty soapbar (also 25")?

That's a contributor in how they get the price down below $1k.

I'm pretty sure they sell more of these at $999 with a gig bag than they would at $1049 with a hard case, ya know?

I like them because they have a couple of typically-upscale features normally only seen on more expensive models coupled with probably my favorite all-around pickups for a great price. Thin glossy nitro finish, good hardware, great electronics, neck binding, headstock inlay, etc.

I think the SG Classic is one of, if not THE best value in an American-made production model guitar today.

Well, how many of the guitars you mentioned have you played? It feels like a nice SG, which (IMO) feels pretty different than a PRS..

Re: Gibson SG Classic w/ P-90's

thanks, commander obvious :D

i've not played any of them ... if i had played them, i wouldnt need to ask

my biggest concern is effect of scale length on tone

i have proven that i can work with just about any ol guitar when it comes to feel - i sound equally ham fisted on all of em

but i have also come to be convinced that other things being nearly equal (e.g. string gauge, pickups, wood type, construction method, etc), scale length REALLY effects tone quite a bit to my ears

I figured... does your finish look pretty much identical to the finish on a standard SG, or are they different, close-up?
