Gibson SG fans????

Re: Gibson SG fans????

i love the way they look but dislike the way they feel, very flimsy and not as sturdy as a les paul or my strat.

Re: Gibson SG fans????

I played SGs exclusively for years. They've got a great grind and lots of mid crunch. I've found that my 70s era Standards seem to feel a bit more solid than the new reissues. Lighter or more fragile, maybe. They're a really feminine feeling instrument, even more than most Gibsons. Fenders feel really masculine and need a bit of manhandling to get them to do what you what.

Re: Gibson SG fans????

i was thinking of getting an s.g special and putting in a phat cat p-90 at the neck, and possibly something like a bucker sized filtertron in the bridge
and replacing the tone pot on the bridge with a mid frequency filter pot
i want something with a unique sound, that stands out
is this a bit of a crazy idea?

Re: Gibson SG fans????

There are certain guitars I feel I must have because I like the classics and variety from one instrument to the next. I also like guitars with character which I think lacks in many vanilla sounding guitars. I have an LP Standard, would like an SG Standard, Strat, and PRS McCarty. I'll have to break it to my wife gently. :)

Re: Gibson SG fans????

The neck-heaviness and the more-or-less fragile neck joint aside...

They look great.
They're easy to play all over the neck.
They sound great. I love Tony Iommi's and Frank Zappa's tone.

In short, They rule!

Re: Gibson SG fans????

Have you ever thought about a Hamer Studio? Not to try to change your mind if you're set on an SG, but I just picked up a Studio and I absolutely love it. I looked at an SG for a while, but after I compared the two, the Hamer just won out in every category. The necks are stronger due to hamer's stressed neck system, the dovetail joint (part of the neck that's glued to the body) is 40% bigger than Gibson's design for more sustain, the body is a little thicker, and all Studio models come with Duncan pickups stock (either a JB/'59 set, or two '59's depending on which year you get.) The best part is that used Studio models can be had for $600-$800, depending on year and condition. The Studio and Studio Custom models are tonally the same, the Custom just adds cosmetic features, like a bound body and neck, block inlays, and slightly nicer flametops. They feel similar to an SG, only sturdier. Same 24 3/4 scale length, same fret size, same Tuneomatic bridge design. Really, the only advantage the Gibson has is resale value. All the used SG's I found were around $1000. If you buy new, the SG will hold its value a little better than the Hamer. If you buy used, it doesn't matter. I paid $630 for mine, as it has some minor play wear, but that doesn't really bother me. I don't know of any guitar that's a better value than a used Hamer.

I'm a little partial to SG's myself. They have a voice all their own. Mine is a '66 Standard (last year of the small pickguard and the original neck) with Antiquity Humbuckers and a Bigsby tailpiece. It is a very toneful old hunk of mahogany and is unafraid of Les Pauls.

Nicely put Steve!

Re: Gibson SG fans????

Concerning Hamer Studios......
I had a Hamer Studio but would take the SG Standard because I think they play better and feel better. i also prefer the tone of the SG which is more unique. again, this is my personal experience and preference but you should consider playability because I had two Hamers and have since sold them both. Again, this is my preference.
