Gibson SG for sale $775... What would you do?

I came across a 2005 Gibson SG Standard for sale in my neighborhood on craigslist for $775. It's got a Bigsby installed on it and for some reason, the owner refinished it cherry red (it was originally black). I've contacted the guy and he's responded... I'm trying to decide if I should go take a look at it, but the fact that it's been refinished strikes me as odd. I don't understand why someone would want to refinish a $2000 guitar.

Hmm... not unheard of but unlikely at that price... For that kind of cash it is most definitely worth a few bucks to have your tech take a look at her before you pull the trigger...

Re: Gibson SG for sale $775... What would you do?

If it looks good and sounds good, who cares? The price is right and as long as it looks legit in person, I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: Gibson SG for sale $775... What would you do?

O_o.... dude, SG standards aren't $2000, more like $1200. i think back then, they charge a couple hundred more for red or natural, might be why he refinished it red.

Re: Gibson SG for sale $775... What would you do?

The price is not right for a refin. He destroyed any value it had with the paint job, and then added insult to injury by mounting a Bigsby to it.

I also wonder when i see a Gibson for sale with tons of mods. Adding a Bigsby didn't save it...changing the paint job didn't save it...maybe it's just not a great guitar?

I almost bought a black SG Standard for $500 a few months ago. Save your money, get something that's worth it.

Re: Gibson SG for sale $775... What would you do?

You can buy mint SG standards used under $1,000 all day.

I would not pay $300 for that thing.

Re: Gibson SG for sale $775... What would you do?

There's a clean LP Studio in white/gold in my local GC for $600. Way better Gibson for less cash, IMHO.

Re: Gibson SG for sale $775... What would you do?

Honestly, I'd be scared tp put anywhere close to that amount into a renished SG. Troll the major cities around you. You mighthave to make a 2 hour drive, but used SG standards in great shape and original can be had in the $700 to $800 range all day long.

i definitely agree. he destroyed a ridiculous amount of resale value with that refinish, no matter how good it looks. the bigsby is just more of the same, not quite as bad as the refinish though.

Re: Gibson SG for sale $775... What would you do?

Check the headstock & neck joint. He may have refinished it to hide a neck break! It's a common problem with Sg's. neck joint and headstocks are weak. As others said if it looks straight to you have a tech check it before you buy it.

+1. It'd be a decent price on a like-new SG Std, but not one in this condition. If you bought it, you'd never be able to resell it for anywhere near $775. You only refinish guitars when the original finish is totally trashed, and you have nothing to lose. The guy ruined the value; don't get stuck with his mistake.

Re: Gibson SG for sale $775... What would you do?

I mean everything about this sounds shady...I bet you quoted the guy word for word when you said "It's a good price on a $2000 guitar" cuz they haven't cost that much in like two years.

hop on ebay for a few minutes, you'll find your SG man.

Re: Gibson SG for sale $775... What would you do?

I just paid $800 for a 61 SG RI in Niagra Falls that's in better condition than that guitar.

Just sayin'....

Re: Gibson SG for sale $775... What would you do?

Since when is a SG std $2000?

I had to sell mine for $1100, like new, with WCR darkbursts.

Not a good price for a refin, IMHO.

Re: Gibson SG for sale $775... What would you do?

I agree that it's not a good price for that guitar. Firstly, it's a refin, which destroys the value. What I would be more scared of, would be the bigsby. It's not factory, and honestly dude, if it's not installed just right, the guitar will never keep tune right, or never be exactly what you want it to be.

Re: Gibson SG for sale $775... What would you do?

Fo' real though... SG's seriously depreciate quickly, eh.

Gibson.com quotes SG Standards at $2000 brand new.

Anyhow, he messaged me again telling me that the reason it was refinished is because when they added the Bigsby it left two holes where it was mounted, thus THE GUY HE IS SELLING THE GUITAR FOR decided to refinish it.... which means this isn't even his guitar.

I'm done looking at this guitar!
