Gibson SG Jr.

I'm looking for this guitar

but I'm not looking to pay 5 grand for a mint specimen (especially now that they've just started hiking in price.. jeesh the same thing happened to me when I wanted a silverburst 5 years back)

are there any good knock-offs of this guitar?.. I won't settle for a Gibson SG special (with P90s) copy because the main deal with the SG Junior is the dog-ear P90 and the pick guard (I just looove that aesthetic, even though I could use a rythym pickup for cleans).. I've also heard bad things about the vibrato systems that came on some SG Juniors so I'd prefer a hard tail model (the wraparound tailpiece like in the picture)

from my research I'd say the best knock-off Gibson brands are Tokai, Edwards, Burny, Heritage, Bacchus, Orville, and Greco.. I'm new to this whole knock-off Gibson game because I've usually just gone for an Epiphone counterpart.. so out of those brands which have the greatest value (I realize some are more expensive then others, I just want to know which has the most bang for the buck).. all responses are appreciated

Re: Gibson SG Jr.

That is exactly the SG Jr I had back in the 90's and stupidly sold. I got it dirt cheap, like under $500 cheap. It wasn't an original 60's model, couldn't have been for the price I paid, can't remember the year though. I'd love to find another one if I could justify another guitar but right now my Strats and Tele are keeping me plenty happy. My only issue with it was that it was a little neck heavy. Other than that, sweet player. Wish I had kept it.

They made that style Jr. in the 80's I think.

You will probably have to go back to the 80's or 70's for that style Jr. in a MIJ. Look up Orville, Greco, Tokai or Burny. I don't think any of the other makes you listed made this style.

That's what I've been trying to find out for sure because I can't find any defining info except for the original models and the recent reissues with the full SG pickguard. You're the first one who's mentioned any other years.

I've seen them up on Ebay every now and then. I don't think they get sold very often because everyone wants the small pickguard...people hang on to them!

Re: Gibson SG Jr.

I just got over wanting a les paul jr and you show that!:yell:
What are you thinking:blackeye:

Re: Gibson SG Jr.

you could buy the one from MF, get a dogear p-90 and a small pickguard and there you go. You'd have a few screwholes showing, but nothing you cant take care of to make it hard to tell.

no sir.. I want the small pickguard and the dog ear P90.. I'm not even sure a dog-ear P90 will fit in that pickup cavity and I definitely don't want to deal with covering up screw-holes on a 700 dollar guitar

btw guys I've been GASing over this guitar for some time.. actually 3 years ago some idiot classmate brought this guitar to use in a high school physics project (something where I managed to transmit a guitar signal to an amp via helium-neon laser light).. he didn't even know what "gibson" was and he was bringing his dad's childhood guitar to school (I offered him $120 dollars for the thing, but it was his dad's so he couldn't).. well the guitar sounded great even with a laser-light guitar cord and I've seen more and more rock stars using this style guitar lately (Dashboard Confessional and System of a Down most recently).. thanks to those rich guitarists these guitars are hot on ebay.. a clean one sells for 5 or 6 grand while they were only 2 or 3 grand a couple months ago

enough story time.. anyways in your opinions and from experience what are the best knock-off Gibson brands?.. I'm leaning towards Edwards and Tokai

Re: Gibson SG Jr.

Greco and Burny generally build their copies to vintage specs moreso than do Tokai or Edwards. You might want to go with a Greco or Burny instead.

Re: Gibson SG Jr.

I always thought Tokai was the best in terms of vintage specs. I think their LP's are based off of a real '59. Whatever you do, rainsong, see if they have LP Jrs. I've been gasin for one lately!
