I like the SG Pro and Deluxe. I think one of the guys from Grace Potter's band plays one of those.

Re: Gibson SGs are the ****.

if you take a small flat 3-4 inch piece of FLAT metal, maybe 1/2 inch thick, and if you are going to keep it, do what i did. my sg is never going to be sold, so i felt no fear, i knew it would work.
if the long metal bar has 3 holes, screw the flat metal under the TOP horn, use 2 holes for stability, top hole even w/17th fret or "A" fret. spray it black.
use a nice strap lock , it will never lean and never harm the instrument.
the narrow flat metal runs parallel with the neck.
it's physics- you are moving the center of gravity from the back of the body to the 17h fret. kind of like any LP or strat, although these don't do it for weight, it work miracles for neck heavy guitars.
it works, i use it on stage, people look at it and say, "wow, you put 2 holes under the horn, the one nearest your chin that ruins the sale value,"
I say, I am 60, i am never going to sell it.
sorry, no camera yet, but i can prove it. it is just like tying a string on the 17th fret(strong string) and wear the string like a strap, over your shoulder, all the way the the butt end, tie it of on stock strap holder. let go. pysics. same thing w/flat 2 dollar hardware piece, just moving the center of gravity.

Re: Gibson SGs are the ****.

2008 Feb. Guitar of the Month, SG Diablo. This guitar is one of the special ones. It'll always be a primary player. Incidentally, I bought it on the day Ronnie James Dio passed away, and it turned out to be my birth month, on the year I got married. It's a guitar that's part of my destiny. I even went to Dio's Memorial in Burbank a few weeks later.

Gold UOA5 Custom 5, Burstbucker 1. It has an amber switch tip now, and the bone nut was shaped and polished by Trutone Music's Paul Flynn.

Re: Gibson SGs are the ****.

Joe, you GOTTA stop posting that, man! You're killin' me over here with the GAS!
But yes, SG's are the ****. I currently have a modded Gibson Gothic SG and SG Classic. iThe SG Classic has been getting the most play time out of ANY of my guitars for the past 2 months or so. There really seems to be no middle road with Gibsons (IMO) they either give you a lemon or they knock it the **** out of the park. This Classic was knocked way out of the park. Blows me away every time I pick it up! I mod everything too (guitars, pedals, etc.) and this is my only completely stock guitar. That says a hell of a lot, IMO.

1 piece body
lake placid blue
24 fret extention
jb/jazz
tri-shot rings
phase tap in the neck tone
parallel tap in the bridge tone
schaller locking tuners
tonepros hardware
switchcraft jack and toggle
jensen caps

about neckdive:

yes, it sucks but there are 3 ways to avoid it

1. wear the guitar properly. a lot of rockers wear the guitar low down by their belt buckles...this causes neck dive usually. wearing it higher can help prevent dive

2. use a leather strap. I have found that a nylon strap is too smooth and slippery for the sg design. leather kind of sticks to you and keeps still.

3. Iommi the strap. take the strap and move it to the cut away.

Re: Gibson SGs are the ****.

I agree! I am playing my SG's more and more over my other guitars. Light, easy to play, fast, and sound killer!

I never understood the "neck heavy" comments. I have an SG Standard and SG Special and neither are neck heavy.

Re: Gibson SGs are the ****.

I love my SG, but I still find it falls a few steps short of a good Les Paul Standard. Find the right Standard and it will be your number one for life. :)

Today I tried some nice guitars just to see what I'm missing.

First I went with a Gibson LP Studio 60's Tribute. P90's and a thin translucent finish.
Then a new Traditional. In both guitars the tone was there (setups were goddamn horrid though) but I just can't gel with the fat heel and the lack of access to the higher frets.

Then I tried a Gibson SG Standard. And it left me wondering why I haven't got one already.

The neck access is excellent, the tones are gritty and percussive. Only thing I didn't like is that it probably doesn't lend itself to very sweet tones from the neck pickup, but I can live with that.
The thin body, everything is right there. The neck was really fat but it was comfy for my hands.

If I sell my Strat and my Cube 60, and add a bit of cash, I could buy one.
I'll have a NGD thread in a couple of months. :D

I just joined the SG club. I bought one those Faded SGs, which the previous owner upgraded with a Duncan JB/59 set. Thing is one of my best sounding guitars!

Re: Gibson SGs are the ****.

I just bought a 72 (birth year) needs a ton of work. Needs a new nut and frets. Pretty excited though I got a birth year Gibson.

Gibson SGs are the ****.

I had a special and a standard and had a jazz/jb in the special. The tone from the special was awesome, but the playability of both was lacking. They were neck heavy and I could not get the action down where I wanted it.

Re: Gibson SGs are the ****.

I feel like crap watching this thread. I won't be able to afford an SG in quite a while to be honest,
I'm paying for my first apartment + my bike, and eventually I'll get a car down the line.

So the poor SG will have to wait. But don't you worry guys... I haven't forgotten about it. :D
