The problem with the Sonex is that number one it's a Les Paul shaped instrument and number two it's from Gibson. If it would have come from anybody else and shaped differently it might have been received better, but from Gibson it just became a symbol of cost cutting measures during the Norlin era of Gibson. People reacted negatively to what they saw as an imitation product, rather than what was supposed to be a technology demonstrator.

Not exactly Gibson's finest moment,Im afraid.
They usually weigh a ton and huge gaps and movement in the neck pocket.
The body was a resin composite called "Resinwood" or some such crap. Basically MDF.
They had Velvet Bricks or Dirty Fingers,but no matter what you put in,the construction just killed tone.
Only buy it if it's dirt cheap and you want to do some experimenting.

Needs to be exceedingly inexpensive. Probably best in a perspex cabinet or hanging from a (re-inforced) wall.

I don't remember anything standing out negatively other than the weight and the loose neck pocket, which both made it feel cheap. I personally think they're really cool looking though.

I used one as my backup in the 80s, I wish I still had it. They are a great bang for your buck guitar. The stock pick ups were great and the guitar had a fast neck with a great action. I dont remember it being heavy in any regard. Some people consider them collectable and want big bucks for them. If you can get one at a decent price I say go for it. If it is priced right and you dont like it maybe you and I can work out a deal.
