Gibson tuners on an Epiphone studio.

Alright, so for Christmas I got a set of Gibson tuners for my Epi because most of the tuners on it rattle. Problem is, the Gibson tuners don't fit. They go like halfway then they get alot wider towards the actual tuner. Unlike the Epi ones that stay the same size.

What should I do? Re-drill? Try and find quality tuners that do fit that are around $50-60(I hope not, but if I have too.)

Thanks!!

redrill, just widening the hole a little should be an easy job.

Done! They seem to fit perfect with just slight widening!

Problem is, it only came with 5 sleeves(I hope. Either that or I lost one but there was a hole in the bag).. That means I must find one somewhere. Shouldn't be hard though.

The real question is WHY Gibson Klusons….

But glad it worked out and you are digging them!!!

just drill them man.

the internet will say you can split the headstock and ruin the guitar.

while it's possible, it's not definite! I did this on my gretsch with great results. Just be very careful.

Thanks, Glenn.

It's not that the Gibson tuners are so bad, but that there are others out there that are so much better. I personally like the Planet Waves Auto Trim Locking Tuners. I also have several sets of higher end Grovers that work great.

The green keys that came stock on my Les Paul just seemed stiff to me, I always ended up going over the pitch I was trying to reach. The grovers I have now are much smoother, I also have some mini rotomatics that are even smoother, they must be better lubricated or something.

Does the tension screw have anything to do with it?

The tension screw, if loosened a bit, will make it easier to turn the key and thus easier to get to exact pitch.

I'm more concerned with chipping the finish. You wont end up splitting the headstock if you open the holes in stages rather than just grabbing the right size bit right off the bat. But if I drill, I always use a taper reamer to shave away the finish at the hole edges first, whether it's enlarging tuning machine holes or potentiometer holes. And watch out when installing the little tuning machine screws, especially in maple ...
