Gibson vs. Edwards

I am considering an Edwards guitar as an alternative to a GIbson since I have found the excact model I wanted. WHat is everyone's experience with Edwards compared to Gibson?

Re: Gibson vs. Edwards

It depends on the model. I hear alot of people rave about the Edwards LPs. I owned an Edwards SG and thought it was junk.

Re: Gibson vs. Edwards

I think the Edwards are pretty good, but people seem to favor Tokais. What model? What's your price range? Used or new?

I was looking for either a Gibson LP SPecial with the 2 P90's, or an equivalent of better quality. I think the Gibson Double Cutaway P90 guitar is around 700, so I'm looking to spend that.

Re: Gibson vs. Edwards

For that sort of money I would say just go with the Gibson.

The real deals with the MIJ clones typically comes with models that Gibson has relegated as standard production models or Historics. A Gibson Les Paul Custom clocks in at over 2 grand. The MIJ clone's are around $500 if you look hard enough and can deal with one that's used.

Re: Gibson vs. Edwards

Edwards are typically considered on par with Ltd for quality, although made in Japan by ESP they are not of ESP quality. IMO they can't really be compared to a GIbson......only a Gibson is good enough ;)

Re: Gibson vs. Edwards

i love my edwards LP however it's far from a normal LP since it's finished in satin purple so it's a bit hard to a/b in that aspect to a normal gibson. my edwards is very well built and plays damn well. i have no complaints at all and she is a keeper. i just bought another gibson les paul so i needed to decide if i wanted to sell my current black gibson les paul standard or my purple edwards les paul to make room for the new gibson. i decided the black gibson is going and the purple edwards is staying that's how much i like mine, i picked it over my current gibson which is also a great player.

Re: Gibson vs. Edwards

I like edwards as it good enough for me. You may not get fancy details like the gibson logo or fret binding, but construction and tone is great. From JeffB I heard that edwards have necks similar to r9s, so the neck it thicker than the 50s style necks. Sd pickups on the guitars are standard, so that is a big money saver and advantage too.

Re: Gibson vs. Edwards

If it feels good, and sounds good, it is good. If it looks good - that's a bonus. Let your ears and hands make the decision - dollars and labels be damned!

Re: Gibson vs. Edwards

Although my experience is limited with edwards, and other japnese manufacturers, I would not hesitate to say that a well built Gibson (regardless of price) is in a whole other league (this point was driven home to me, hard just a couple of days ago).

That said, I think $ for $ your chances of getting a better "finished" instrument are with Edwards or Tokai. Meaning, you prolly will get a much better cut nut, fretjob, finish appplication, etc etc. It will be "tight".

But there are intangibles..that I cannot accurately put into words..... that bug the crap out of me with the Japanese/Korean/Chinese guitars. I guess the simplest way to say it is..they just don't feel right or play the same as a (well built & setup) original Gibson. Some are pretty close, like my Tokai, others are just all wrong from the get-go, like the Edwards....which felt and played like an ESP/Ibanez shredder axe more than a Les Paul.

So if you're a stickler for aesthetics & details..you're probably better off with a Japanese copy.

But considering the availabilty nearly everywhere and pricing is similar for the axe in question (double cut w/ P90s), I'd peruse every local faded Gibson DC I could find, and get the one that sings.

Re: Gibson vs. Edwards

you could also always go with an Orville!! :)

I've been watching ebay for a deal on an Orville 335 for a while now. I just want to find a decent deal on one.

Re: Gibson vs. Edwards

This is my opinion, based on my experience with Edwards guitars (3 of them) and the Gibsons I have played...

a) If you want the best workmanship in an LP-type guitar, buy Gibson Custom Shop.

b) If you must have the Gibson name, despite the high price/workmanship ratio, buy Gibson USA.

c) If the name doesn't matter, and you want high workmanship/price ratio, buy the Edwards.

In all cases above, good looks or good workmanship DOES NOT automatically equate to good sound. So you will be taking a chance by buying any instrument without playing it first.

Great post. So true. I'd rather have some aesthetic issues anyday of the week than a guitar that is too bright, too dark, or too thin naturally/acoustically. Pickups can only compensate so much.

Careful with Orvilles...I learned the hard way that some are made in Korea and they just plain suck. Any Orville made in Japan has a serial number embossed on the back of the headstock (like a real Gibby). No serial number = made in Korea. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Most the Orvilles on eBay as of late have been Korean models.

"Orville by Gibson" is the high end...lacquer finishes, US electronics, Gibby p'ups.

If you like Edwards, you'll really like Navigator.
