Gig bags?

Re: Gig bags?

To go places, i like those "Kases" things that are soft outside with a zipper but still have a hard foam shell around the instrument.

They are significantly more friendly to the car and generally more tossable.

Re: Gig bags?

As a gigging guitarist, about a year ago i switched over to using some bags to save space/weight but did not want to compromise the protection of the instrument ... I looked and looked and finally bought one of these ...

http://monocreators.com/vertigo-electric-guitar/

Haven't looked back ... extremely satisfied. Expensive, yes. Worth it, yes. I now own 3.

My main thing was the fact that I don't have a van to haul my gear in anymore (thanks to an accident) and the vehicle i replaced it with just doesn't have the room i expected it to have.

I have traveled with the MONO bag, and had a roadie drop my guitar TWICE right on the headstock .. I about had heart failure. no issues whatsoever AND the guitar was still in tune. Ill preach these till the day I die!

Welcome to the forum.

Why do I feel like I just watched an infomercial?

Your roadie, eh?

Re: Gig bags?

I dunno why so many people are comparing decent hard cases to super-cheapo gig bags. Seems like comparing apples with pineapples. A good gig bag (like the MONO one mentioned a few posts above) will protect a solidbody guitar at least as well as most HSCs. On the other hand, carrying your guitar around in a gig bag that costs and protects about the same as an Express Mail envelope is a risky endeavor. On the other other hand, carrying a guitar in a crappy HSC (e.g., one that doesn't effectively support the neck) is asking for trouble in the event of a fall.

Bottom line to me is that if it's worth playing, it's probably worth protecting, whether in a robust gig bag or well-built hard case.

Where are the so many posts doing that? I don't see them.

The OP is only considering switching due to space considerations. Super high quality gig bags actually take up more space than hard cases IME.

Thank you for pointing that out. I see no point in super high quality gig bags as I'd rather have a hardshell for much cheaper than the gig bag.

I'm looking for something along the lines of the PRS SE gigbags. That's why I'm looking at the Fender Metro or something close.

Re: Gig bags?

These are good http://www.amazon.com/Fender-Standa...1108506&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=fender+giog+bad , they're mostly what you see in the pic I posted a page back. You don't want the ones with zipper pockets on the sides if you plan to used these for storage, they add unnecessary bulk on the sides.

The practicality of space savings with narrow gig bags is part of what makes me lean towards having a many medium quality guitars over a few high quality ones. Had space been a bigger issue, I might go for a few high quality guitars, although I have to weigh that thinking against the ever unfolding conclusion that premium guitars are a waste of money, not "past the point of diminishing returns", but an all out, utter waste of money.

Also, the notion that hard cases could be as compact as these $30 Fender gig bags is total poppycock. In no universe is that true. They're not only more compact width-wise, but they're shorter and require less storage depth as well.

Re: Gig bags?

If you've ever slipped and fallen on the ice, and landed on top of a guitar, you'll either be glad you had, or wish you had, a good hardshell case. That being said, since I've got a boatload o' guitars and they only leave the house for repairs or maintenance, they're mostly in bags, when in anything at all. When I do take them somewhere, I put them in a case to do so. Even then, I generally opt for the polyfoam variety.

You really gotta post all the crucial details of your post in the subject/topic line of a thread, because that's all anyone ever reads before posting.

HAHAHA ... well .. for lack of a better term, it was someone that worked for one of the venues we were playing that INSISTED on helping get loaded in ... and grabbed my guitar along with another one ... he sat mine precariously on top of a fairly tall (5 ft or so) case that it fell from ... then when we were leaving he swung a door open with the headstock end of the case ... I'm just glad it didn't hurt anything...

LOLOLOL .. it wasn't meant to sound THAT bad ... just trying to make the point that i was skeptical on going the bag route at first with predominantly local gigging with occasional regional and beyond gigs. And I am pretty anal about my gear.

Thanks for the welcome!

It's cool, just giving you a hard time.

Re: Gig bags?

You can't be "anal" about your gear and not demand that some total stranger get his pud-pullers off your axe. I don't let anyone carry my guitar for the very reasons you cited - opening doors with the headstock area of the case/bag, laying them on top of anything rather than standing them up in a corner or on their side leaning against something sturdy. If someone wants to help, they can get out of my way and hold the door so I can use both hands to carry my 2x12 and head, or my rack and guitar, but under no circumstances do I allow anyone to carry or move anything I paid for, even if they're in the band.
