Give me your combo amp suggestions $500-1200

I am having a hell of a time trying to find a nice combo. I have my eyes on rivera chubsters, peavey xxx 40 watt or 60 watt, and anything like that. Used would be ideal for me. Amps like that anyway. If anyone has seen anything around like these amps around, please let me know. It's for home use so I don't want to have it turned too loud before the tubes kick in. Save me, if I don't get a nice combo soon I will go the way of the pod.

Traynor YCV-40. In my opinion it's one of the best amps on the market, and best of all it's reasonably priced. I've had mine since they first came out, and it still sounds good, and it's been bullet proof.

JCM 600 series, 60 watts(2el34's/412ax7's), 2 channel, master volume, dual reverb, presence control, xlr out with cab simulation. It is a VERY underated amp. The prices range from 300 to 500 depending what combo you get (601=1x12, 602=2x12, 600=head). I love mine, great vintage Marshall gain channel and beautiful cleans. I got mine in trade, but it was priced at 500 with the matching 1x12 extention cab.

If you liked the Peavey XXX combo, look for a clean used Prowler. It's the same basic amp, and you'll be able to find it for a LOT less.

This Owl seconds that recommendation, being the proud owner fo one myself. Not only durable and reasonably priced, its got tone to die for, combines the best aspects of Fender (chimey clean sound) and an old-school Marshall (kick-butt overdrive and crunch) and best yet ALL TUBE BAAAYYYY BAAAAAYYYYY!!!!!! :headbang:

I love mine, too. Great tube sound, (it's a hybrid).
I got it for $305 on ebay, in new condition.

Re: Give me your combo amp suggestions $500-1200

I happen to like the POD.

There are lotsa Peavey's in that price range.

Re: Give me your combo amp suggestions $500-1200

peavey classic 30 or 50. i friggin love mine. i can get basically any sound from it, from jazz to blues to rock to hard rock to even metal

Re: Give me your combo amp suggestions $500-1200

I kind of like the traynor ycv-40 from what I researched and read. I would change the speaker though. Have you traynor guys tried it for metal at all? With or without pedals.

Re: Give me your combo amp suggestions $500-1200

Here's a review that I just read on http://www.musicgearreview.com/review-display/3789.html

Sounds like you can get metal. I think it comes with a footswitch and they also have a 15 or 20 watt version. Buy it from Muscians Friend and if you don't like it, send it back for a refund.

Manufacturer: Traynor
Model: YCV 40 Custom Valve 40
Category: Guitar Amplifiers

Purchase: I choose this amp because it has a great vintage sound even in the clean channel. The sound is very clear and powerfully. If you don't know that it is a 40W Tube Amp you wouldn't guess that it has the 40W Tube Power. I bought in a music store in Gießen (Germany) for 715€ (730$)

Likes: I like the sounds you can create with it. In the clean Channel you have a very clear an warm and powerful sound. It sounds like an old Fender Bassman I think. In the 2nd Channel or Gain Channel. There you can create much distortion and Overdrive sounds. You can play like AC/DC and Manowar or Metallica and Bon Jovi. Great crunchy and powerful sound! Fantastic. To play solos and Lead playing you can push the boost button. This channel pushes the gain sound. Then you have a great sustain.

Dislikes: I don't know what to write under this topic. Maybe it would better the amp has 2 12" Celestion Speaker.

Quality: The amp has one 12" Celestion Red Label Speaker and 40 Watt tube power with 2 Sovtek 6L6B and three Sovtek 12AX7A Tubes. If you don't know that it is a 40W Tube Amp you wouldn't guess that it has the 40W Tube Power. The construction is very solid and comfortable.

Summary: The Traynor YVC40 is a great tube Amp to play any kind of music. You have a clear and powerful clean sound a crunchy Gainchannel with the boostchannel to play solo. If you don't know that it is a 40W Tube Amp you wouldn't guess that it has the 40W Tube Power. The construction is very solid and comfortable.

Re: Give me your combo amp suggestions $500-1200

Groove Tubes Soul-O 45.. It has unfu**ingbelivable tone!!...Geat amp!

Re: Give me your combo amp suggestions $500-1200

Rivera sounds like a good choice. Although if you are looking at amps in the $500-1200 rage take a look at an used Fandango. You also May or May not find a used Shiva for around $1200 used.

If you want to save some cash, as menioned here already get yourself a Peavey classic and get a Keeley SD1, or an Analogman pedal, or a good OD distortion box and boost the front end. It has been tried over and over by a lot of players with great results. The Fender Hot Rod deluxe with the same configuaration as for the Classic 30 or 50 seems like a good choice as well. I know you want a combo but a blackface Fender bassman head with a 2x12 cab (Avatar) and an OD distortion box will possibly make you smile as well.

I've heard good things about the Mesa F-30 with an OD pedal.

If it where me I'll go for either the Fandango, or the Blackface Bassman with a 2x12.

One very important question, what style of music do you play? what are you looking for in any of these amps? Do you want good cleans? Do you want high gain? Are you looking to get vintage type of tones?

If you are looking to get Marshall/Fender in one box Rivera is the answer.

like a mark 4 on ebay :)
I'd rather not spend a full $1200, I just want to know all opinions. I hear it's a great amp though if you have a lot of time to spend tweaking knobs.
