Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

Hmm... Out of thos three single channels, which one seems the best for me? The 2204 I think, but I just hate that its naked without Tolex.

Do you know if 100Euros is what it will go for or?

Well, having it recovered isn´t that hard or that expensive ;)

Definitely not. Partly because I´m admittedly also considering picking it up and turning my old one into a rack-head :D

Befiore my fellow vintage purists jump down my throat: the headcase and chassis were destroyed in an accident about 10 years ago, and the amp has since been housed in this headcase:

Hmm, damn it.

Well I dont have any money ATM, and I need to talk to my dad about selling off the ENGL. I know he'll be so pissed, but I dont want something I cannot use 100%.

But I'll first try the Fender pickup in the Charvel, and see how it goes.

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

I plugged the Custom 5 in the Charvel, it was a little improvement but still, I dont really like it.

I called around.

I can get a ADA MP-1 with a Peavey power amp with EL-84s with 60w I think and trade that with the ENGL, or instead of the MP1, a Marshall JMP-1 for a little bit extra.

A Super Lead Plexi Re-Issue straight over for my ENGL.

A Russian old Red Bear (Is that right?) and some money/other gear for my ENGL.

A H&K TriAmp head for my ENGL.

A Park 150watt head for my ENGL.

They also had a 50watt 2channel JCM 800 combo, or a JCM900 SL-X.

Should I wait for something else, or does any of these sound really appealing?

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

I have trying everything from 0.73 to 2.00mm, my favorite is 1.14mm though.

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

Ok alright..I don't know which amp would suit you best but make sure you play each at least half an hour and compare the amps. Make a pause, do something else and test the amps again. That would be ideal, I don't know if you have the opportunity.

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

I have made an agreement that I will take my guitar to the shops, first play the 1959 reissue, then the Red Bear, take a lunch break and then return. They told me to bring my BD-2, because I use it too boost my signal, so I could hear it with my own setup.

But I am more interested in experiences and such with the amps.

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

OMG, I just heard VHoholics soundclips with a 1959SLP reissue, damn it that sounds like an awesome amp.

I know the Plexi has 4inputs, which one should I plug into and bridge etc, and how should I set it for a Van Halen like sound, and a real 80s metal sound?

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

I just talked to a guy who knows alot about he gear pretty Maids used. On that recording thats my favorite, he said it was a JCM 800 with a Tubescreamer infront of it, but which one would have been available in 89/90?

And would a SLP Reissue with a Tubescreamer infront even get close to the sound I want?

After hearing that amp jumppered and cranked all the way, I honestly see no way you'll ever get the VH tone out of it.

You're FAR better off with a JCM800.

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

I think this is the first time I´ve ever heard someone say that an 800 is better than a 1959 for VH tone....

The 800 will definitely do 80s metal better, though ;)

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

Heh yeah....allthough I am never going to be fond of that sound:)
Hey by the way Zerb...that amp that kills people may rise again...he has promised to keep working on it, so hopefully soon we will get something up and running...lol 2 years later;)

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

??? Not getting VH tone out of it??
You so lost me here Mephis ClanClan:D

Maybe eddie's clean tone, but nothing like eruption. I could see a plexi doing that if you were willing to roast the tubes though.

His amp wasn't stock.

(I'm going to get hated for this heh.)

You can get a Tri-Amp for your Screamer???? Great amp!!!

The ADA MP-1 will definately do '80's - used by Nuno Bettencourt, Skid Row etc

VHoholics clips are great, but most were done with the amp flat out, which is just insanely loud!!!

However, modded Super Leads and 800's were the main amp of choice for the '80's guys.

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

Haha Rid, I dont want a damn Park, that name sounds funny :D....

Hmm, that ADA/Peavey setup, would that even sound close to the sound I like, or would it be a waste? And what if it was with a JMP-1?

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

If money is a some what of an issue, I definately stand by AOR, with the money you get for you Engl you could get some other staff that will definately put you in the ballpark.
