yes. When I do, bridge OK, neck too muffled.

You said you are off Dimarzio for some reason but they do tend to be less bright or shrill than Duncans. Just saying.

On a related note, what are all these double cream pickups you are hoarding and would you like to thin the herd a little?

The dimarzios are. But still.

What about a 59 A2 in the neck and a Custom with UOA5 magnet in the bridge, or a 59/C with A2 magnet on the bridge.

For Seymour Duncan's I think SH-11 Custom Custom will tame the brightness in the bridge position. For neck APH-1n is sweet with a bit rolled back mids.
In the DiMarzio range I'd suggest AT-1 bridge with Air Classic or PAF 36th neck.

OK, thanks, I’ve come back to this post because I am more determined to solve this problem.

However, I’m not a huge fan of the Slash neck tone distorted. If I use the APH-1 in the neck, then how much variability is there? Can I get tones that differ substantially from the typical one I hear on YouTube or other demos of that pick up, where people just try to get close to Slash?

While I use it, I don't sound or play like Slash, so it doesn't sound like him- your mileage may vary. It has a buttery, flutey thing going on. I don't know how to describe it. It isn't tight (for that, use a Jazz or 59) and not good with a ton of preamp gain.

Never tried either. I do like a 59/Custom Hybrid in the bridge though with a RCA5 magnet.

I have a 59 A2 in my tele I really like but for shorter scale I still prefer the A2 Pro.

I think the A2Pro has a bit more articulation (even though it's warm).

Thing is, with very bright guitars, the choices in pickups doesn't have to seem limiting. You need those mids and muted highs to compensate for the brightness. It will then probably be closer to a balanced sound, but we won't know until you try. Another option might be a Black Winter, which isn't just a metal pickup. Using a pickup's eq to balance out. I had a poplar Music Man that was all mids, and I had to use pickups that I usually would never pick (Jazz and Custom 5) to scoop out those mids. It actually sounds like a 'normal' guitar to me now.

Right! And Duncan pickups are very sensitive to guitar woods.

Custom/Custom bridge APH-1 neck...

I had this set in my Tele-Gib which had a Ash body, Maple neck, & Maple fingerboard so it was a very bright guitar! These two humbuckers really gave me exactly what I was looking for in the end, perhaps they’ll do the same for you???

I've done more reading on the APH-1s and find that lots of players rave about their ability to tame a bright guitar and still remain articulate. I think I have to give it a try, at least in the neck.

Longer scale lengths have more harmonic content. So part of the reason why a Strat with a humbucker doesn’t sound like a Les Paul is the longer scale length. Longer has more twang and brightness.

Same with short vs. long scale basses.
