Godin SD

Box stock Godin SD..humbucker at bridge..single..single coil
I'd like to replace one pickup to get more sustain. I play in a little acoustic type band and want to add a little noise in the background to some songs. My neighbor has an ESP with an 81 and 86 pickup..sounds great but just too hot for what I want. I want smoother..mellow, but justy a little nastiness. Any recommendations?..and which pickup should I change out?

Re: Godin SD

I've got a Godin LGT which is out of production but is pretty much identical to the SD. If you're planning on swapping out the bridge, I would recommend the Custom Custom...very smooth, clear, and thick.

If you plan on swapping out the neck, the APS-2 would work great. It's smoother than a typical strat pickup with more mids and less highs and bass.

...and if you do decide to swap out the humbucker, make sure you get the trembucker version. The SD has wider string spacing at the bridge and the trembucker pole pieces will align better with the strings.

Re: Godin SD

Thanks for the suggestions...I'll start looking around tomorrow. Do you have a preference for which pickup I should replace?

Re: Godin SD

A new pickup won't really affect sustain, unless the magnet is very strong. However, a hotter pickup will cause more compression in the amplifier which will give the illusion of more sustain. A custom custom would probably be good for that.

The Alcino II magnet of the CC will also have a weaker pull on the strings and should help improve sustain somewhat.

As far as which pickup to replace, it really depends on your preferences since a neck single-coil and bridge humbucker generate completely different sounds. I would go by which pickup you currently enjoy playing with the most in your band and swap it out.

Re: Godin SD

Thanks, folks!...Think I'll look into the Trembucker for the bridge. Was playing it last night through my new Epi Valve Junioer with 3 mods..nice clear bell like at 11 oclock...just want a little more ooomph when I pound on it. Thanks for the suggestions!
