Going from 6's to 7's ?!

I've been looking at a 7string guitar lately. Nothing set in stone yet
since I've got a new car coming :)

Just curious how many of you owns a 7string and how
big of a change it was going from 6 to 7?

Re: Going from 6's to 7's ?!

Try the bottom end of a seven string set on your six string if you want a taste of what you can do with a seven string. You might even like it better than a 7 string. I personally prefer B standard to a seven string.

different tunings for different folks I guess :)
I know of one guy that adds a high E instead of the low B :)

Re: Going from 6's to 7's ?!

You're really limited in replacement pickup choices.

Grab a baritone 6 instead.

That said, I've owned a few 7s and they were all decent guitars. I ended up selling them though, just didn't need 7 strings - and I tune to open C or open B on all of my 6s.

Depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to play it like a normal guitar with the low B when needed, I think a 7 string makes sense. But if you want to primarily play it for the fact that it has the B, I'd just tune a six string to B standard.

The double high E sounds cool. Kind of like a toned down Bich.

I've thought of a 7-string a long time ago, i realized it would just be more difficult, less options

and 6-string's are just easier on me cause i don't have big hands and seven string necks were a bit uncomfortable to me.

Re: Going from 6's to 7's ?!

There really is no transition in my mind. It's just an extra string and a slightly wider neck. Just fun fun fun all the way. Get one and have a blast. :)

Re: Going from 6's to 7's ?!

Buy a baritone conversion neck and build a project guitar.

While this is a cool option to me its not the same thing. I love my baritone but there are times when what im doing needs the 7th string. I like my 7 string when i want to keep my normal fingerings while playing but add the extra low of the 7ths string. Its just a matter of picking the right tool for the right job.

Re: Going from 6's to 7's ?!

If you play with the thumb behind the neck you'll barely feel a difference.
I really liked the 7 stringers. Made me rethink some arpeggios. Found out I could play some sweep picked arpeggios more efficiently, like playing everything on different strings or staying in the same position vs moving around the neck like I'd have to do on a 6 string guitar.

It's not like back in the '90s or early 2000s where the only choices around where the Dimarzio Blazes or the EMG 707. There's a wide range of 7 string pickups around to suit any need. Not a deal breaker IMO.

Re: Going from 6's to 7's ?!

I have never owned one, but have played several.

For me, it's so hard to try to play music for 6 string guitar on 7 string guitar, I never get used to the fact that my "A" string is now "E".

Re: Going from 6's to 7's ?!

Just one more string for me. Key is to stay focus, maybe that's why I'm OK with 8s as well.
