Going to Guitar Center for the first time!

I'm going to California (probably Irvine or somewhere around there) tomorrow and my mom says I can hit some guitar stores while I'm there to keep from being bored (we're going to Disneyland...whoopee...nobody in my family is under 13!!! wtf?!). Anyways, I hear a lot of guys that work at these stores can be A-holes. What should I avoid and how do I keep them away from me when I'm trying stuff out? This is also going to be my first time in any major music store, so it could be overwhelming :)

Have fun Biu !!! Once those jerks hear you rippin' it up, they'll either stay away or they'll be asking YOU questions!!!

Aside from that, if it seems they're glued to you, I usually just say, "O.K., I'll let you know if I need some help...What was your name?" Basically, they wanna know that if you're gonna buy something, that they get the sale.

Again, have fun! And for what it's worth: You don't need to be 13 to have fun at Disney!!!! :)

It will be very overwhelming. The first time I went there, my jaw dropped, and I'd been in and out of music stores for over 10 years :)

Yeh disney land (paris anyway)is kickass, and id say over 13's would enjoy it much more than under 13's..

Do they have tittie bars with beer in Disneyland?

Expect some salesperson to come around and shake your hand with an intro and an offer of assistance. Take them up on it, and ask to see whatever you feel like playing. If it's common, in-production stock, no problem ...if it's something from the vintage section, expect them to watch you.

Once you've chosen an ax & amp, just show a little respect. Don't rub your jeans rivet against the back of the ax, don't crank a stack to "11," don't attempt to engage in head-cutting contests with the other customers .... just chill and enjoy the guitar in your hands.

They're in the business of making money. They don't know if you have two cents or two grand in your pockets. Even if your pockets have only two cents at this time, you may someday have a few bucks to burn ; they'd like you to remember how well you were treated on your prior visits. As long as you treat their property ( and it's still their property until you ring it up at the counter) with respect, you should have no problem.

One last word ...unless it's a deal that your local shop can't match, do try to buy from your local independant dealer. Most of these guys are hurting, and it's the big shops that are squeezing them. You have the right as a consumer to seek the best price, but you should consider that the extra few bucks that you may spend with your local shop might just help them stay in business. In the future, do you want to have to mail-order strings ?

Have fun, and be prepared to pick your jaw from the floor.

Don't play guitars out of your price range. Relax, play what you usually play, don't worry about other people in the store hearing you. Don't play too loud. Don't allow yourself to get played. Don't be rude about it, but you might end up with a salesman who knows less than you do.

that's just weird to not have guitar center near you - I have two I visit every so often just here in San Diego... that's not counting the half million in the rest of socal/norcal... aren't they everywhere?

Biu- have you ever been to Ed Romans in Vegas? From the pics I have seen that place is awesome.

I live within an hour of 5 Guitar Centers. I have been to all but one of them. Pretty cool stores. My favorite store in the US is Drumcityguitarland in Denver.

We only have one GC here in Austin, but we tons of great "mom & pop" shops. Ray Henning's Heart of Texas Music should have a historical marker IMO. It's where Stevie purchased his Number 1. We also have Guitar Ressurection which is the place to go when you're ready for your first high end axe. I go to GC mostly for picks and cords but I do like the sheer number of guitars they have on display plus it's a five minute walk from my house. :smoker:

Be sure to play "Stairway" and "Teen Spirit." They love that stuff.

Hahaha! Yeah! We will get Alizee.....we must..... :)
Oh my, she is hot

I forgot how to play "Stairway to Heaven", so no worries there! I got sick of it after the first 1 million times I played it anyway  I also got sick of all the Metallica **** I used to play, so I probably won't be the annoying guy that plays every popular guitar tune there ever was :)

Usually when I try out guitars, I play some Van Halen, Racer X, Yngwie (only the super easy stuff), Mario, and Queen to see if the guitar is suited for those styles (my style). I just hope that won't come off as a guitar battle challenge to anyone :saeek:
