Gold cleaning recommendations

Any of you have a great way to polish out scratches on gold pickups covers. Most polishes do very little and cymbal polish is way too abrasive. I know the layer of gold isn't very thick. Don't want to use anything that will take that layer off. Thanks.

Re: Gold cleaning recommendations

Don't use Gorgomyte or the classic "Miracle Cloth" polishing cloths on gold plated hardware....learned that the hard way

There isn't anything you want to use beyond a simple polishing cloth, used with light pressure, and possibly a very small amount of water moisture on the cloth. This is just to remove oils and gunk, not scratches. If the gold is actually scratched, all you will do by rubbing it is to make it worse.

Re: Gold cleaning recommendations

On budget guitars, the gold flashing is so thin that any vigorous polishing will go right through it.

I agree - let it tarnish. Looks classy that way. Shiny always looks faker than it already is.

Re: Gold cleaning recommendations

Polishing out scratches is simply removing the rest of the surface down to the level of the bottom of the scratch. A few times of that and you'll have no gold at all. Polishes doing little is what polishes are......a VERY fine scratch remover.

Re: Gold cleaning recommendations

The gold will eventually wear off - no way around it. I use a drop of vodka on a cloth once in a while to clean one of my pickups that has a gold cover. It's a year old pickup and the gold is still on it, but I don't expect it to be for long.
