I need some opinions on the Les Paul Goldtop with a P90 neck and Mini Humbucker bridge. This guitar is for rock and blues, who has experience with that combo?? Thoughts??

Re: Goldtop Les Paul P90 neck and Mini HB Bridge

Not any with the Mini HB, but P90's are the best! Why not a hot P90 in the bridge too?

Re: Goldtop Les Paul P90 neck and Mini HB Bridge

A mini in the neck is pretty clean...and kinda wimpy IMHO. I have had mixed success using minis in combos with P90's, Teles, Strats, etc. They have their own unique character and in combination with a lot of single coils do a weird cancellation thing (Albert Collins anybody?) or the output/bass response is unbalanced. Just my limited experience and YMMV...

Re: Goldtop Les Paul P90 neck and Mini HB Bridge

I rerouted my LP special (2 p-90's) for a full HB in the bridge. I put in a JB for the bridge and kept the stock P-90 in neck. Very happy with results. It's my favorite middle position on all my guitars.

+1. And not much selection in aftermarket mini-HB's either. I believe that Gibsons mini's aren't calibrated for neck & bridge slots. LP's with twin P-90's are a much better idea. Or twin HB's; or a HB bridge & a Phat Cat neck.

This all started for me when I began looking for an inexpensive gig guitar. My main workhorses are my Les Paul and my Telecaster. I was looking for a backup gig guitar that was $500 range and could cop the Les Paul and tele tones in one. I was looking into the Reverend line and Joe Naylor told me to check out the Double Agent. It has a P90 neck and Humbucker bridge. Based on that, I started to think about my Goldtop. I remembered that Neil Young had a P90 and Mini HB bridge. I was exploring this as a potential Les Paul / Tele-ish hybred. Sounds like it may not be as good a sound as I had hoped, pairing a mini HB and a P90 neck??

Neil uses a Firebird pu (dual magnets) in the bridge slot, not the mini HB ala Johhny Smith (a different critter with a single magnet and slugs). He's got a metal cover p90 in the neck, but he seems to use the bridge position Firebird pu most of the time...

Re: Goldtop Les Paul P90 neck and Mini HB Bridge

yes I think its ok, there are lots of people who play full size humbucker guitars in the neck and bridge,

Just try the Goldtop Les Paul P90 neck and Mini HB Bridge, just to be different from the double humbucker guys,

Individuality,

make your own signature sound, then post a clip, :)

I love my Alleykat with a SM-1n and Phat Cat combo. Nice, chimey, and balanced with plenty of air.

i use a phat cat(p-90 type) in the neck and a humbucker in the bridge with some trick wiring(series/phase/split) all in my sg. it's a very versatile guitar, able to get all sorts of cool tones. for ex if i engage all 3 switches i can get brian may type screaming lead tones. or if i set to the bridge cut the coil while out of phase, i can get a quasi-tele lead tone. or i can just use the guitar in standard form without any switching, and get great rock/blues tones out of any of the normal positions using just volume and tone knobs with a bit of overdrive. p-90/Hb for neck/bridge is a great setup.

Re: Goldtop Les Paul P90 neck and Mini HB Bridge

I'd actually suggest the opposite. I think minis sound great in the neck pos and P-90s sound better in the bridge, but then again the combo you speak of works just fine for Mr. Young.

If you're going to put a mini in the bridge pos, i'd reccomend the "Seymourized" - it's got a little more "beef" than a standard vintage output mini, but still maintains the flavor. As far as P90s go, I like plain old, out of the box, Gibson P-90s. They sound a bit smoother and fuller than the Duncan vintage P90s to me.

+1. HB bridge/P-90 neck is how half of HH guitars should be manufactured. The warm PU is were its needed, likewise for the clear, open PU. Twin HB's is a cliche that's way overdone.

I went for the Antiquity Firebird Bridge. Will let you know how it turns out.

Re: Goldtop Les Paul P90 neck and Mini HB Bridge

FWIW, I had a 70s LP Deluxe, twin minis. The mini in the bridge worked great. I had initially replaced it w/a DMZ direct replacement that basically was a Super Distortion. At the time I used a Twin and a Tube Screamer, so I had a preference for the hotter DMZ replacement.

After that, I replaced the Twin w/an early model JCM 800, and the mini went back in. It just rocked through that Marshall, and I used it straight in. Sounded more complex/interesting than the hotter DMZ replacement. It does seem that a lower output pup will sound better than a hotter pup when played through a great MV amp. I was playing old school versions of hard rock and punk rock at the time.

I've always thought that a P 90 in the neck was one of the best ideas around, but I have not paired one w/a bridge mini, so I'm unable to give you input re the balance btw the two pups.

This was 20 yrs ago, so I am fuzzy in terms of more details.

the mini humbucker in the neck of my LP Deluxe is far from wimpy. It can get some brootal tones

Re: Goldtop Les Paul P90 neck and Mini HB Bridge

The SM-1n I had sounds surprisingly close to a APH1 neck.

Very PAFish, but full potted and a little lifeless.

It isn't brighter or thinner.

For the heck of it...this vid is nice in that it features the pickup combo questioned. I only see the guitar player using the P90 in the neck for the entire song. It is an awesome tune, using a lot of dynamics. The lead tone and good view of the guitar is wonderful @ 2:07 in the vid:

I love the stock (neck) mini in my 76 Deluxe....sweetest sounding neck pickup EVER! IMO......

Re: Goldtop Les Paul P90 neck and Mini HB Bridge

I love the sound of the stock minihumbucker in my '70 LP Deluxe. And, FWIW the Ant. Firebird in the bridge position was absolutely rockin'!
I you like, you can hear them on the myspace link below.
"We Dream" uses the neck min + Lovepedal Eternity for the lead section.
"Halo" (in the Nimbit player and also on the soundclick page) uses the Ant. Firebird in the leads. A really bada// piece of gear, for sure.

Re: Goldtop Les Paul P90 neck and Mini HB Bridge

You guys forget the DiMarzio soapbar shaped Buckers....They work pretty well.
I have a DLX-90 and a pair of Yamaha Q-100s if anyone wants to try them out.
I really like the DLX-plus for a ballsy bridge tone in a Les Paul.
I think Dimarzio makes a "Tone Zone" and a Super Diatortion model too.
To me a Minibucker belongs in the neck not the bridge. I used to have a '72 LP Deluxe and it sort of sounded like a Telecaster on the Bridge Mini-bucker.
