Hey Rich.... of course i love what you have done with that Tele... Great to see she is home.... Now you will have to learn how to windmill and jump like Pete did in 1982.... :)
Shoot - I got that down years ago. With Townsend and Nielsen as influences, my stage persona was always "out-of-control geek". Of course, these days it would be a lot easier if I could lose 35 pounds and the hernia.:smack:

BTW - my offer stands. Get yourself a black single-bound body, and I have a free bridge for ya!

I think you ought to market it as the "Rough Boy" model and go into business.
Oh, yeah, there's a great business model: manufacturing lawsuit-prone guitars out of second-hand parts purchased off the web.

Now that Fender has threatened everybody out of copying their pegheads, I don't know why they don't built these. Their HH Tele (that MF/GC special thing) has a hardtail Strat bridge, a carved top, and (I think) a set neck. I get the feeling they're offering it as a budget alternative to a Les Paul, rather than just letting it be the great guitar that it could be.

FENDER! ACTUNG! Flat top! Single-bound! Bolt-on neck! Bridge pickup mounted in the bridge! Then, get Townsend to endorse it, and smash ALL of those God-awful Strats.

And send me a free one for giving you the idea. Make it black... I already got a gold one.

we'll see what i can do...... thanks for the offer.....

I will never in my lifetime be able to jump like Pete... I hear he used to jog for miles before any Who tour to get into shape....

Re: Goldtop PT!

Were it not for Pete, I would probably be standing still all uptight playing my guitar. But because of Pete, I'm now jumping around and doing windmills, even during jazz band shows at my school :chairfall

Beautiful guitar Rich, I always liked those PT Schecter's, and yours just looks fantastic!

Re: Goldtop PT!

you know what this thread did to me??? made me want another one in Gold!!! LOL!!!

seriously though...i couldn't love a guitar anymore than i do my Schecter! it's so versatile and sounds so good that it's definitely become what i call a "lifer" just like my Takamine...it's NEVER going anywhere EVER! i've had a few guitars that i couldn't say that about and well...they left...lol!

Just a joke, Rich......Fender probably spends as much on lawyers as it does guitars.

Re: Goldtop PT!

PS Rich, your Shecter body looks like it has some gold sparkel to it.... or is that just the photos?

If you mean big, glitter-like sparkle, no. It's metallic, but just plain goldtop, like a Les Paul.

Re: Goldtop PT!

Very nice job! My Tele-moddin' days are over, but I still wanna do a gold top...with P90s! Have fun, don't get hurt man. hehe

Ha! I found the brand-spankin'-new, August issue of Guitar Player in my mailbox when I got home from work. The very first article (page 38, all ads up 'til there... sigh) is entitled, Schecter Turns 30. The very first sentence credits Pete Townsend with "helping to transform one of the foremost replacement-part companies into a maker of world-class instruments."
co-inky-dink!

Re: Goldtop PT!

I finally spent some time playing my new gold Tele tonight. Everyone else in the neighborhood was setting off fireworks, so I figured I could make some noise for a while, too.

I LOVE IT!!!

The 59 neck is the sound I've been looking for, big and fat.

For a while, the 59B sounded awful twangy compared to what I expected, so I spent a long time dialing it in (pole pieces, height, etc.) Finally, I noticed that it was also noisy, turning certain directions wrt my amp made it hum, whereas the neck p/u was silent. I turned my attention to the bridge pickup's coil-tap switch, which had no effect. A-ha! It was in single-coil mode! :smack:

Opening up the cavity, I found that the cover has shielding foil on the back, and this was touching one of the tabs on the pull-pot, shorting the coil tap. I bent the tab down and re-soldered it, and now it works fine.

I was worried that the 59 bridge might not be hot enough, but I played around with pickup heights for a while, and I think it's going to be OK. I might try one of the Customs down the road, but I need to spend a good long time getting to know this one first.

I've never really used the middle position on HH guitars - thought it sounded too much like the neck pickup alone to be worth it. So, I wired the pickups out of phase - that gives a real snarky nasal tone. Not something I'd use all the time, but its a third, usable sound that will never be mistaken for a 59N.

Did I say I LOVE IT!?!

Re: Goldtop PT!

Good to hear it rocks Rich... oddly when i put a JB in one of my Jacksons i found out that it was out of phase with the stock neck humbucker..... i liked it, so i kept it! Sounds awful thru a clean amp but thru an overdriven amp it makes a nice duck like quack!!!! :)

Re: Goldtop PT!

Rich it came out killer and you have given me a good/bad idea of my own hehehe.

enjoy it and it's nice to see it done and that you like it!!

Re: Goldtop PT!

I've seen a lot of stuff on the web, written by people who hate the skinny little frets on MIM Tele necks. I never knew what they were talking about - I thought the frets on my MIM Nashville were pretty good.

NOW I get it... my Nashville doesn't have the tiny frets everyone's dissin'. The MIM neck Xssive sold me for the goldtop has TINY frets. It's obvious when the guitars are side-by-side.

Good thing about small frets - they'll wear out fast, and I can replace them with something more suitable.

ya those MIM standard sized, vintage style frets are a pain when a guy like me loves large frets... I still use 4 MIM Strats and a Teles with those small frets but only because they were cheap....

Re: Goldtop PT!

That definately came out a killer guitar! Awsome idea and work :D

Re: Goldtop PT!

Bubbling over with pride, I e-mailed an old, good friend of mine, singer in my college band who has gone on to a career in "real" music and now a relatively successful operatic mezzo. I linked the pics of my new guitar, and told her all about how it was built, why I built it, how over-all great it is, and how I'm a happy boy.

She wrote back, asking what the happy boy is playing on this whiz-bang new guitar.

My response: "Playing?"

Re: Goldtop PT!

i really dig the 59 neck in mine as well, and i like your idea of wiring...i may try that one of these days...you should give the CC a try in the bridge...it's a good pup!
