gonna refinish my les paul studio

My 94 les paul studio has seen better days, and it's time to refinish it. It was a wine red but over the years it's more like a poop red, so I'm gonna strip it down and rehab it
Before

And now after a couple hours of stripping

Going for a different finish..I want something like this, just need to figure out what colors to use

Re: gonna refinish my les paul studio

A diluted brown, and amber... maybe a touch of orange in the brown.

Re: gonna refinish my les paul studio

You might want to do a wash stain coat of brown, then sand it back (lightly!), to make the grain pop in the center.

That's a good idea...thanks....

Now another question should I get amber and brown dye, or brown and yellow then I can tint the yellow to tast?

Re: gonna refinish my les paul studio

I went ahead and got a full spectrum of dyes to mix up my own recipes. *shrug*

Re: gonna refinish my les paul studio

Want to do that to mine while you're at it? I have the exact same guitar!

Re: gonna refinish my les paul studio

Your use of the phrase "poop red" raises some uncomfortable questions about your poops and what, exactly, color they normally are.

Re: gonna refinish my les paul studio

That's gonna look nice man! Not that the original didn't look good too, I kinda like the wine red but the new look will be classy as hell.

Re: gonna refinish my les paul studio

Yeah my guitar was nice when it was new, but that was 21 years ago..lol.. the finish darkened up so much it almost looks black indoors and with all the dings, it was time

Re: gonna refinish my les paul studio

I bought one of them 60s tribute studios and ripped the stock stuff out and went with 50s wiring and a JB and 59. That guitar is super resonant, much more than my painted Les Paul. I like your idea of keeping it light and natural. You'll like that, I the finish you chose. It's beautiful!

Re: gonna refinish my les paul studio

Not sure if anyone's done it with a guitar, but you could look into water popping. It opens up the grains in wood to accept more stain in the grain. I do it with wood flooring occasionally.

Re: gonna refinish my les paul studio

You should tape off the edges for clear binding like PRS does. Done nice and clean, it'll really set off an amber top.
