gonna refinish my les paul studio

Keep in mind that taping alone will never give you a super clean edge, no matter how well you do it. The way to get a razor sharp paint edge on the binding is with a scraper in a simple jig that sets the depth of the blade to the desired binding thickness and height. And you must have very thin layers of lacquer in order to get the best results.

I really really really like wine red on Les Pauls, but that one aged bad. I'd just refinish it to a really nice wine red with the faux binding, then new gold hardware.

Re: gonna refinish my les paul studio

You should tape off the edges for clear binding like PRS does. Done nice and clean, it'll really set off an amber top.

I was gonna suggest this faux binding technique, it really adds a touch of class, perhaps get some maple strips to bind the fretboard to match?

Re: gonna refinish my les paul studio

BTW how dis you strip it? sandpaper & elbow grease or chemically?
I have an epi LP custom I bought as a project, I'm looking to finish in black & age the binding, any hints would be gratefully received

I used a head gun and scraper, you just have to be carefully with the heat gun so you don't burn the wood, but if done right it doesn't take long, I think it took me and hour to strip the whole guitar

Re: gonna refinish my les paul studio

Did some sanding today, I have some groves on the back gonna try and steam them out.....

Re: gonna refinish my les paul studio

did it have a headstock repair at some point?

Yes it did, I use to use Dunlop strap locks and one of them failed and the guitar went down, I was pissed....so I switched to Schaller locks after that

Re: gonna refinish my les paul studio

For the mahogany, if you want a really beautiful aged look, there's a 4-layer technique in "The New Wood Finishing Book" (author Michael Dresdner) that will really set it apart from the norm (I'm going with the look for an SG build I'll be starting after I'm done with my current build.

Re: gonna refinish my les paul studio

Tried steaming out some of the groves on the back, they came up a little but not all the way, so I sanded a little, now I'm grain filling the back again
