good amp with wattage attenuation

thanks for any advice in advance.
i'm looking for a amplifier that will give me great cleans while also giving me decent distortion.
i'm using blackstar ht metal 2 channel distortion as my main source of gain at the moment but good warm cleans are the priority
and it needs to have some form of wattage attenuation so i don't make my neighbours hate me anymore

Re: good amp with wattage attenuation

Unfortunately they are no longer made, but a Bumbox Cielo will fit that bill; JMP50 clone with jumpers internally bridged, power scaling, valve reverb.

Re: good amp with wattage attenuation

Price range?

New or used?

Combo or head?

What speakers ya got?

Ideal distortion tone? (70's rock, 80's classic-metal, thrash, hyperdeathgrindspitfuzz)

Re: good amp with wattage attenuation

Since you already like the Blackstar Sound, I would strongly suggest the Series 1 45 2x12 combo. It has everything you need and probably more.
I would take this amp over the HT metal. You can also get it in a head form in the Series 1 50 watt head.

Re: good amp with wattage attenuation

hi guys i've seen the ht 5 metal, jim root dark terror and 6505 mh and all look good
i already use a micro dark and a vox 1x12 with a celestion greenback speaker
i play a schecter synyster gates custom with 12-56 in drop c and a ibanez rgit20fe-sbf in drop b
my amp budget is maximum £800

Re: good amp with wattage attenuation

i like having very tight distortion and something that isn't overly fuzzy with my eq set: bass:6, mids:9 and treble at 7 on my blackstar ht metal distortion pedal with the isf on about 30% so fairly british tone

Re: good amp with wattage attenuation

Egnater amps would probably cut it. The Rebel 30 has a clean and gain channel, watts knob for each channel and a tube mix knob (amp has EL84 and 6V6 tubes). Quite loud too. One thing, you won't notice much in terms of volume with the amp, but you will notice a change in how the amp responds when using the Watts knobs. The points where soft compression and breakup occur will be lower on the dial as you turn the watts knob down.

Their Tweaker series amps have some similar features but with only 1 set of tubes.

They have other lines too, but whether those are of interest depends how big your budget is.

Re: good amp with wattage attenuation

hi guys i think if i can afford it i'll get the blackstar series one 50 watt if not i'll go for the 6505 mh or maybe the valve king mh

Re: good amp with wattage attenuation

i love the tone of kt88 valves but could i switch out the el34 in the series one 50 watt for a pair of kt88s

Re: good amp with wattage attenuation

Try the orange Rockerverb mkiii. Great cleans, greater overdrive, and it not only attenuates, it can be switched from 100 watts down to 30. The only downside is that there's no mid control on the clean channel, but don't knock it until you try it.

Re: good amp with wattage attenuation

is 30 the lowest the wattage goes?
i know the jim root dark terror incorporates some of the rockerverb gain structures

Re: good amp with wattage attenuation

I'd recommend checking out these options:

Peavey ValveKing 20 MH head (goes down to 5 and 1 watts)
Peavey 6505 MH head (goes down to 5 and 1 watts)
Randall Diavlo RD1 head or combo (has FX loop so you can run a preamp pedal set on low volume and crank your master volume)
Marshall DSL1 head or combo (goes down to 0.1 watts, 2 channels footswitchable, good clean channel, FX loop so you can run a preamp pedal, see notes for RD1 above)
Marshall JVM1 head or combo (same notes as DSL1, just higher gain)
Bugera T5 (goes down to 1 and 0.1 watts, not high gain but you could always stick a pedal in front)
Bugera G5 (goes down to 1 and 0.1 watts)
Blackstar HT 1 (better distortion than cleans IMO, though)

Re: good amp with wattage attenuation

I just realized that it's unclear whether you need a giggable amp that has attenuation, or just a practice amp that has attenuation.

If you're looking for giggable, the highest difference between full power and attenuated level I can think of is in the Tubemeister 36, which goes down to 1 watt.

The Fender Bassbreaker 45 goes down to 1 watt, but that is the loudest 1 watt ever; I think it's more of a change in feel than change in volume.

Or just, get an attenuator :D

Re: good amp with wattage attenuation

i'll looking for something for home that'll be versatile as possible,
my main three that i've seen are the 6505 mh, valveking 20 mh and the blackstar series one 50
also the blackstar series one 50 only goes down to five watts but is five watts too much for home use

The Mark II Egnater Rebels are worth checking out too, the attenuation is supposed to be better than the original ones and they fixed the reliability issues.

Re: good amp with wattage attenuation

i checked those out and they seemed good but i'm really interested in the 6505 mh and blackstar series one 50
but is 5 watts too much for home use?

Re: good amp with wattage attenuation

Another option is the Marshall DSL-40. Can be run at 20 watts or 40. Plenty loud for gigging and should be ok for home use.
