good cheap half stack for metal

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

I'd say look into Randall.

The G2 sounds good. Just need the right guitar infront of it, and just EQ it right.

It isnt a tube amp, but for the money it sounds very nice :)

I'd like to recommend an older Marshall VS-100 or VS-100R. That's valvestate 100 watts. If you're familiar with Tommy Victor or Prong that will show you one sound they're capable of. Especially the album Cleansing. I like them though because they get some pretty good in-between distortion as well so they make a good rock amp as well as a metal amp.

The older ones had a preamp tube which really helped warm up the tone for a Soild State amp. I'm sure it wouldn't be more than 2-300 dollars.

When I saw prong in the early 90s on the Prove You Wrong tour, he had a silver marshall head - the anniversary jubilee or whatever. I however, at that time, did have a valvestate head. It was pretty cool, but squeeled when turned up, and didn't get very loud. Awesome for recording though.

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

on the zakk wylde clip the tone sounds pretty good but i don't like the effects used that make it sound much too buzzy.

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

can i just buy a cab and hook it up to my combe to make a 3/4 stack!? lol but for reals can i?

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

its an FM 212R. you may think it can't do metal but it can! i wish i had the gear to make clips and knew how to make clips to not only show you my tone, but so you guys can give me tips on how to play. anyway, i think my tone kicks pretty good ass.

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

I would add the combo to an extension cab. However, it does not look like it has speaker out (from the fender site)
I would install an output jack, and rewire the 2 internal speakers for 16 ohms (they are 4 now, once again going by the fender site).
Find a good 8 ohm cab and plug that in. It will end up being a little over 5 ohms, so a little less power, but I doubt you will notice.
You could also run it to a 4 ohm cab, and just not use the internal speakers.

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

crate cab?

yeah, but get the bigger cab (usually only 100 more). it'll add more bass than the small cab. it also has better speakers. it's rated for 200 watts while the small cab is only rated for 100 ... that's the tell tale sign.

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

Carvin "V3" half-stack. It's about the price of a Mesa Dual Rec head alone!

Mick Thompson of Slipknot is using it.

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

Sometimes Craigslist has good stuff.

www.craigslist.com

I tend to like it better than ebay because I can try things first and everything is local. Good luck finding a decent deal.

I think the advice about spending most of the money on the head and worrying about upgrading the cab later was a great idea. You can make a great head sound better with great speakers, but you cannot make a crappy amp better that way; it just makes louder more defined crap...

Flame shield ON!

I'm just playing...

Aloha

Re: good cheap half stack for metal

I saw a brand new PV Windsor 120 watt tube head and matching cab for $750in a local store here the other day. That would be tough to beat. Of course it wasn't plugged in and it was right up front at the doors so I didn't try it.
