Good choice for a cheaper little amp?

Yeah, I was wondering if the Roland Cube 20X is a good choice.

I have a Cube 30 for myself, and was planning on getting a Bandit 212 and giving my sister this one, but I think I've decided to keep mine and get her a cube of some sort.

My local guitar shop has a 20X for 140$ and 3 month layaway which seemed like a nice deal to me.

Opinions? And if I decided to leave the world of Solid state modeling amps, what would be a good choice in the same price range?

Opinions?

Which Cube amp model pre-sets does your sister like and use on a regular basis? It is possible that she would prefer a different feature set to you.

I doubt that any worthwhile valve amplifiers will fall into your immediate price bracket. Plenty of old SS stalwarts should still be available pre-owned. Aceman sings the praises of the Marshall Valvestate series. The Fender Princeton Chorus and/or Power Chorus should still be out there. Roland JC20. Orange Crush.

She mostly just likes the variety of my Cube 30. She's into classic rock like me, but she really likes Pink floyd/The Police, that kind of music in which alot of effects are used.

Yeah, I've mostly decided to stick with my cube for awhile. Saves me some money to get a new monitor and get tickets for Van Halen. :D

Re: Good choice for a cheaper little amp?

Fender Mustang or Vox Valvetronix

If I didnt have a glut of amps
I'd own a Valvetronix right now

bunch of models and tons of tone

go here
on the right
Search on Vox
in the Category of Amps
you'll find several VT20 amps under $100
one VT15 at $49

Thanks! I know my local guitar shop has quite a few mustangs in.

Don't get me wrong, I'm open to suggestions but is there a problem with the 20x?

Re: Good choice for a cheaper little amp?

no but a bit of variety will be good for both of you

true dat.

I'll see what he has there, and if nothing I'll look online. Like I said, I'd rather buy from there but it's not a huge problem. I'll probably be there tomorrow, look around, report back here and then put one on layaway on Tuesday.

Could turn out differently though. ;)

Re: Good choice for a cheaper little amp?

The Valvetronix amps sound pretty good. Some really decent models on them.

Re: Good choice for a cheaper little amp?

The small loudspeaker is a drawback.

THINKS: Does Fender still make those G-DEC amps? The additional functions in that would be tremendous fun for a young learner.

I was thinking a drum loop would be a major plus

Small loudspeaker?

And I'll be going to the shop on Tuesday, report back here Tuesday evening and then put whichever one on layaway Wednesday/Thursday unless they don't have anything of interest.

Re: Good choice for a cheaper little amp?

Does anyone have any experience with the Fender Mustang I?

Yup, used to have one, only sold it because a friend needed an amp for his daughter and he offered me $75 when I had paid $100.
I liked the Mustang I a lot but it needed to be connected to the Fuse software to get the most functionality but do It once and you can have 30 of your own presets and after that it can be pretty "set it and forget it". The tweed champ model on it sounded righteous and that was the main voicing I gravitated to, that and the princeton reverb setting. It's a physically small-sized amp and so I think it did best at getting that "small fender amp" tone.

When it was time to get something similar I got the new Champion 20. The open back cab (mustang was a closed back) lends even more to that "small Fender amp" vibe, plus there was no need to connect to Fender's Fuse software, just dial in a voicing and go. I feel like it's awesome and does the Fender sounds better than the Valvetronix and I haven't played a Cube lately. Plus it looks exactly how I'd want a small amp to look.

Thanks! I mean it's only like 75$ used. Seems too good to be true.

What is this Fuse software? I heard the amp was very computer dependent in a way. Is it free? ;)

Yeah the fuse program lets you edit the presets, you can change amp models, cabinet models, fx, volume and gain, treble middle bass and presence, and even a setting for "tube bias". Yes it's free and it hooks up to your computer with usb.
It's essential to get the most from the mustang I and II as the presets suck noodles.

The mustang 3 and 4 have more knobs and a little display panel for doing that kind of preset editing, but the 1 and 2 need a computer to edit things like cabinet model. The 1 and 2 don't even have a midrange control on the panel.
