Good delays?

I have a boss me-50 and i think i'm going to get rid of it and need a good delay. I've been trying to find a decent one that isn't insanely expensive. it seems for delay i'll probably not use more than 600ms and don't really need reverse (cool but not needed).

I've seen some like the SIB Mr Echo plus for $180 at pedalgeek and the Visual Sound H20, but i'm not sure if they are delays or just echos? What do you guys recommend for around $100-200 for a decent delay?

I really like the Echo Park from Line 6. The modulation on digital mode is nice, and the tape and analog sims are very good. Tap tempo, and easy to set up to sound good. If you have a bit more cash, the DD-20 from Boss is very nice, it has tape and analog sims, I believe, plus multiple presets. Speaking of Boss, if you are looking for digital, it's hard to beat a Boss DD-3 or DD-6.

Others on the forum have good luck with the Digitech Digidelay. THe SIB is a very popular delay, I'm actually intregued by it. The H2O is a digital delay and analog chorus in one. If you are looking for the Analog sound with 600ms of delay, I love the EHX Deluxe Memory Man. It's a bit more coin, but it's a great unit.

As far as echo vs. delay, really they are the same thing, but most people think of a shorter delay time, fewer repeats and a more low-fi sound when you say "Echo", and digital fidelity with as many repeats as you want when you say delay, but really they are the same thing.

Do you know if you want digital or analog (true or simulated)?

For 600ms you'll probably want a digital delay. Analog circuits usually produce 100-300 ms using one or more bucket brigade chips, and they sound very warm and dirty. Maxon makes a 900 ms analog delay, and it uses 8 chips in a row! It's over $200 anyway, so the affordable alternative is a digital delay. Then you have to decide whether you want a digital delay that fakes sounding like an analog delay, or one that is trying to sound clean and clear like a digital delay can. That's where words like echo and delay get tossed around irresponsibly. The H20 is a digital delay. It's "analog voiced" which means they take some of the treble away. It sounds pretty good. Then there's the Boss DD series, if you want a pure digital delay you can't go wrong with those.

The delay on my boss me50 was suppose to be modeled after the dd6, but it seemed to not have the original guitar sound in the delay sound. I think the pedal as a whole was mediocre copies was the problem.

The H20 seems more like a reverb than a delay almost, i'm not sure, but i am needing a chorus too and having the two in one would be nice if the delay is about the same as the dd6 upto 600ms.

Check out the Ibanez DE-7, it's digital but it has a very 'guitar friendly' tape echo mode with longer delay times than you will ever need. They're cheap and they sound good with either clean or distorted signals.

I love my DD-20. If you've got the space (and the current to drive it), go for the DD-20 rather than e.g. DD-6. They cost almost the same..

Spend ~75 bucks and build the BYOC delay. I've really been digging mine, it surprisingly warm for a digital delay

The DD-6 is WAY more than 600 ms...it's over 5 seconds!

If all you need is 600 or so ms than I say stick to an analog delay...the Electro Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man is 550 ms and has modulation, Maxon has seveal analog delays that are close to and more than in some cases that 600 ms mark...at this point it just depends on how much you can spend on a delay. The H2O you mentioned also has built in modulation and runs upto 800ms of delay...there are loads of echo units out there it just depends on what you want/need and can spend.

I think i'll just go ahead and get the H20 guys. I need a chorus and having both on one pedal sounds nice, plus i like visual sounds quality so far.
