i don't understand anyone who doesn't like slash 's tone!

i would have to agree... I am not saying that it is the tone for my style but i couldn't see GnR in general with a differen't tone

Re: good gear = bad tones

the guy who invented, you have some very ummm...'unique' tastes... haha. If you think JPs tone sucked on pauls go take a listen to since I've been loving you on the song remains the same video, if you don't like that tone you ARE crazy!!! haha. and by the way, Jack White has the most boring, uninspiring tone I think I've ever heard!! I guess we're just different...haha

Re: good gear = bad tones

Perhaps he's referring to Eric's 'Journeyman'-era tone. At that point (when I saw him live), he was using a massive Bradshaw rack, and his tone sounded like soup.

Pretty much have to agree with you, Invented Guy, with the exceptions of liking Slash's tone and not liking 80s era Billy Gibbons.

Re: good gear = bad tones

o ya and slash being the most overated player in the last 20 years...I think your thinking of kurt cobain....haha. slash is my freaking Idol!!! :notworthy

As for Metallica...I really think that ALL their records up until Load sucked...mostly because they wouldn't try anything new. As far as Slash goes...I hate his tone, people call it the "New Woman Tone"...bullsh*t, his "tone" stinks, and for the record (this is where I will get hate mail) I think he is one of the most overrated players of the past 20 years! Anyway as a side note...bad gear=great tones

any ideas...

Jimmy Pages Dano comes to mind, ok Dano's aren't bad...just cheep
Jack White, plays total garbage...sounds killer
EVH, come on...Ed's best tones were a $180.00 piece of homemade junk!
Mark Arm, Trashed Hagstroms ands a Silvertone...great tone
Sonic Youth...all of them, play junk, trash, and garbage...and make some the best, coolest, and original tones I've ever heard.
Tom Morrello, homemade guitars, pawn shop guitars, broken guitars, junk stomp boxes, broken stomp boxes...makes us all wonder...How'd he do that?

OOOkay here we go. Firstly - all metallica albums up to "Load of Crap" RULED!! Everything after is garbage!

Secondly Slash rules! Geat tone! AMAZING songwriting!

Thirdly - Bad gear = great tones - THATS NOT TRUE
Its the PLAYING that brings good tones - not the marshalls and you know it!
Eric Johnson will sound like Eric Johnson through anything - but his "Lenny Breau" harmonics won't come out the same on a cheap mexi strat through a fender frontman.

and lastly - Tom Morello makes NOISE on his records - and NOISE is part of the music he plays. You don't need killer tone to make noise - you need to know how to make it. (Tom Morello rules btw...)

You have to admit that Cobain was not a guitar player. He knew like 10 chords.

However he could really express himself with his guitar with the things that he did know. His music was very personal to him.

Oh definately. Cobain was more of a songwriter than a guitarist.

However, I cant say he was overrated. He had multi-platinum albums, a huge fan base, and influenced many of today's bands. I wouldnt necessarily consider that overrated.

Re: good gear = bad tones

Pardon me, but I have to say that EVH's current tone sucks...especially if you've been spoiled by his earlier tones.

Re: good gear = bad tones

I like Tom Scholz's tone.

I was unaware that there was ANY glory in '90's guitar:wink:

Re: good gear = bad tones

FYI...I am very familar with Blackie, do your homework...After Eric was encouraged to find a replacement for Blackie and before the EC signature heplayed several Elite Strats...the very first EC model proto's were also based on Elites...It's sad but true.

Re: good gear = bad tones

I agree...Jeff beck has the best tone...well tones!

I love ALL of Billy's guitar sounds...even the 80's one's

As far as Kurt goes...what can be said about him that has not been said 1000 times...as far as his guitar tones...
Bleach was pretty much a Buzz Osbourn tone rip off
Nevermind had pretty much forgetable guitar tones
InUtero...The genius that is Steve Albini shined through...the tones were abrasive, in your face and harsh as hell...I LOVE EVER BIT OF IT. On top of that, the clean tone on Verse Chorus Verse is one of my favorite clean tones of all time

Why aren't you guys listing the old blues guys. I heard Buddy Guy a few times, but what about BB King, Muddy Waters, SRV, etc... Slash's, Jack White's, or Mettalica's don't even compare. They aren't enven in the same building. Oh yeah, and what about Hendrix. I don't even think he's been mentioned.

To my ears Buddy's tone is very thin and sharp. His voice and delivery is priceless though ! Gotta love Buddy Guy!

My favorite song of his is "I suffer with the blues" - he really suffers during that!

maybe this has been talked about before, but...who has killer gear and a bad tone...I'll go first.

Jimmy Page(very overrated...sounded much better on a Tele)
Slash(I never understood anyone wanting the "Slash" tone)
Early Metallica(It's fizzy/buzzy, and it's not defined)
Alex Lifeson
Geddy Lee(I have never seen so much good gear sound a bad as it does when both Alex and/or Geddy is using it)
Tom Sholtz(I HATE his tone)
Steve Miller(No balls at all)
Receny Santana(It's just a bad tone)
80's Eric Clapton(Elite Strats just don't sound good)
:wrf:
