good gear = bad tones

Man.... I don't know why so many people hate the AJFA tone. I don't care if it was recorded DTB. I still think the rhythm and lead tones coming through that Mesa MK IIC+ are some of the greatest I've ever heard. The cleans could be beefed up but I still love that album for its tone.

it's just basically no mids at all!!!!!!!!!

it sounds dry IMO, but this is why i liked the load, reload tones more. mids!! :)

Re: good gear = bad tones

The reason behind Metallica's "fizzy/buzzy undefined" tone is due to....their MARSHALLS! Ha! Then they got a little too bottom heavy and started lacking mids when they converted to the Boogies. However, the Boogies are the era when their tone was at the peak - IMO.

Anyway, to each his own.

Oh yeah, and what about Hendrix. I don't even think he's been mentioned.
Hendrix's tone was just bad ass.

Great Gear.
Better tone.
I think that has something to do with his custom pickups. For some reason it sounds like it's on the edge of a (pinch) harmonic on every note he plays. It sounds incredible and I have no idea how he does it. A great example would be on DT's cover of Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding.

Re: good gear = bad tones

Tone is a strictly subjective thing, something that rocks your boat in a lovely way might be unpleasant for someone else.

I do believe that good tone = good settings AND good playing and the gear is a secondary (but of course important) thing.
