Whichever make/model you go with, I don't think there's any question it needs to be a slab of mahogany. Here's my two Les Pauls P90's, a custom shop special and a 54 custom reissue (all mahogany), although I really liked the SG Classic I once had as well.

Re: Good guitar with P-90's??

Guild Blues 90 is a Bluesbird with P90's. Back a few years ago, Guitar Center reentered into a nice fat contract with Gibson and they dumped Guild which had just gotten bought by Fender. THe old Westerly RI plant was shut down. GC was blowing out their demo BLues 90's for 599 and their Bluesbird with humbuckers for 799. It was the deal of the century. I ended up selling mine and making several hundred bucks in the process.

Guess what, I'd love to have one again. Chambered body, handmade and all that. Big mistake selling. Profit isn't everything. :(

Hello Hello Carrot--
What is the Gibbo Custom Shop calling that color on your Special?? I can't tell by the picture if there is grain showing through the paint. TV white? Regular TV?? Limed Mahogany?
Thanks-
Brian.

Re: Good guitar with P-90's??

Well being heavily partial to LP's I would say a nice Jr or a Special.

You can usually score a decent 90's SPecial pretty cheap. Dump the stocl p-100s and throw in a set of any SD P-90's they are all excellent.

A slab of mahogany and a P-90 or 2, you can't go wrong..

Re: Good guitar with P-90's??

The SG Classic is available at long and mcquades for $1150 Canadian, I don't know how much they sell for in the states. A double cut les paul special goes for a grand here. For that much money I think I'd get a warmoth melody maker.... made out of korina.... but I do not that kind of money.

The 54.:( Want.

I played a blueshawk for the second time in a store a little while ago. The first time I played one I didn't like it, the p90s just didn't sound right. Too dull and thick. But the second time I tried doing some melvins, helmet, and early nirvana riffs (stuff from Bleach). It was amazing... very very grungey and sludgey. So I guess it's how you dial it in.... also goes for a grand up here.

P90s are great.

Re: Good guitar with P-90's??

anyone messed with those Squier Tele Custom IIs? those are 230$ for a tele with Duncan Designed P-90s in them. I have no clue how good they are, so I'm asking whether or not they're an option 'cause they seem like they've got some potential. let me know otherwise. as I said, never played 'em, but hell, the price is right.

another guitar you may think about is the gibson blueshawk

The Blueshawk doesn't have P-90s, they are Blues-90s. Kind of a cross between a Fender single and a P-90. They have non-adjustable magnetic polepieces like a Fender, use anilco instead of ceramic (P-90) magnets, and are wound less than a P-90. Same size though. They are kind of a meatier Fender single that handle gain better. I just got a SD Vintage P-90 for the neck, I am looking for a Custom P-90 for the bridge. :scratchch They are good pickups, just not for me.
