Good Les Paul pickup set - replace 57/57+

Re: Good Les Paul pickup set - replace 57/57+

I like the Gibson '61 in my Les Paul with maple neck for blues and for classic/hair/metal rock, just by playing with volume knob, you may find them for cheap on eBay.
I have a Screamin Demon in my Strat and it should work well in an LP with mahogany neck but it doesn't have a reputation to be warm/round, more cutting like a knife and "a bit" of single-coil character. Works well with almost any amp model I use in my Eleven Rack (Plexi, JCM800, JTM45, Soldano, Matchless, Bogner).

If you like the '57 in the LP, I would say like @chadd and keep both guitars as they are and use an OD for the LP when needed.

Please, it's not that hard to get a Page tone. I bet you could nail his tone with nothing more than a Tele direct into a soundboard.

Which is exactly what he did on some songs like No Quarter!

The SH-5 gets me there, but doesn't get me the Plexi - PAF sound (THIN LIZZY !!) when I back down the gain. That is why I mentioned just putting a Tube Screamer in the signal chain when I want the Classic 57+ to snarl.

You're best off having a guitar with an SH-5 custom, and another guitar with a PAF.

Barring that, what you just suggested works perfectly and was exactly what many of the big name boys used back in the day - a stomp to push their (now) vintage Marshalls and PAF equipped guitars into hi-gain territory ("goose the PAF").

Also, doesn't have to be a Tube Screamer... could be a:

MXR 6 Band EQ (or similar)
MXR 10 Band EQ (or similar)
MXR Micro Amp (or similar)
BOSS DS-1 (a lot of guys back in the day would turn the dist really low and just crank the level)
MXR Dist+ (sounds best with an amp that's cooking but needs a little more push)
Rangemaster clone (Catalinbread Naga Viper, etc) (sounds best with an amp that's cooking but needs a little more push)

etc.

Keep in mind, however... with some of these types of stomps (MXR Micro Amp for ex.), they will boost all frequencies and therefore can turn your low end into flub... an EQ is a great way to boost (MXR 6 Band does +18dB) and shape (cut the flub, add mids, etc) at the same time.

The most versatile set of Duncans I have is the WLH set. I haven't found any style that they couldn't do in a rock context.
