I'm going to be building a warmoth project soon. And I really dig the tonal properties of basswood for a rock guitar. Most likely I'm going to put a duncan distortion in the bridge. I usually use JB's in the bridge of my guitars and '59's in the neck. Those are probably my two favorite pickups. If I had to choose a 2nd choice they'd be the jazz neck and DD bridge.

So, for a rockin' axe, which neck pickup would work well with a DD?

Jazz neck works perfect!

I voted Distortion. I just put one in the neck, and I'm loving it. Especially great sound when split. Also, I really like the idea of "matched sets". (Even though, I only have one, myself.)

Only basswood guitar I have is an RG1527 with a Custom/Jazz combo. The Jazz is ok but it wouldn't be my first choice. I have a 59, Distortion and Full Shred in various mahogany guitars with maple tops. Either of those three will be good choices. The Full Shred is ridiculously articulate with shimmering cleans. The Distortion is a very smooth lead pickup with a ballsy attitude and great cleans especially when split. The 59 is more of an all around pickup with clear cleans but can be somewhat woofy under gain if not eq'd just right.

While I've never tried a DD neck, I say go for it just for the sheer fact that you have neither and it'll make the guitar a DD/DD combo.

You cannot go wrong with a Jazz neck.

the Jazz is my favorite humbucker to throw in the neck position with Distortion in the bridge. I will soon be putting that set-up in my Ibanez 7-string.

Can you describe the tone of the full shred?

I voted distortion because I had a set in my maple top LP and they sounded real good together. I was not as happy with the the Jazz, but the PG sounded the best of the three in the neck with the distortion IMO.

What body style are you going with and what styles of music do you play the most?

well i dont know, its a sound which notes can be defined well between each other, i find it has plenty of highs but also plenty of lows, a very well balanced pickup that bites and slices through a sound without sounding shrill or harsh like a dimarzio evo, in the neck i would imagine it simular to a jazz but with more highs, very sensative to playing nuances and a very good shredders pickup(doesnt compliment bad playing), though it would do cleans very well also, for a medium output pickup it can push the amp pretty well, on the clean channel of my 5150 i have bright mode on with just 3/10 gain to keep things clean, the coil tapped sound of the full shred is very good and can give the sound of an old 60s strat (think the beach boys sound :P), i think for the neck of my jem a full shred would give me everything i want, and fix everything of the evo that i dont like.

is that what you wanted to hear?
