I'm not into bells n whistles: built-in effects or modeling; however, Cubes sound great because they're coming from the masters of bells n whistles. Roland Cubes are really excellent-sounding gear.

If you don't mind a little rattle, you can pickup a used marshall class 5 amp for like $250. Very "meat and potatoes" but very god if you have a couple pedals. A lot of them have issues with rattling but it doesn't bother me too much because it's not like i use it for recording.
