Good MT-2 Metal Zone sounds?

I have a boss mt-2 and a lot of times i can't get a single sound i like out of it, but other times it sound great. I think the buttons are real sensitive. I'm looking for a good high-gain sound with good chunk, but not way over the top metal. Any solutions?

Best tones I ever got out of an MT-2 was on a low battery. Dim light through a cranked amp was thick and juicy.

If you have one of the more recent power boxes that have the "SAG" feature you can get the same effect.

You essentially just want lower voltages. Try it!

The best tones I ever got from the MT-2, was using the factory recommended settings in the owner's manual. I spent less than 15 hours on this pedal.

The best sounds I ever heard out of a Metal Zone were those of it hitting the pavement.
Worst pedal Boss ever did, IMO.

i perspnally dont have one, but i had a mega distortion...sometimes you shouldnt buy stompboxes that are so heavy on gain.

its better to get an overdrive or a simple distortion pedal and boost a distorted sound with it.

thats how kirk hammett gets alot of his guitar sounds.

I bought this pedal a few years back and hated the nasal sound it produced, so i bought a mod kit for it. The mod didn't sound that that good. I put the original chips back in. But one thing about the mod i notice was to take out the C25 chip and this seamed to take way that nasal sound out of the pedal. Now it seams to be a more usable pedal. If you try this let me know how it pans out.

I recall when they came out that it was one of the few pedals that could do the thrash/hi gain sound for a decent price in an indestructable housing. But the ones I heard back in the day seemed very mid-scooped, very sterile, and not too pleasant on the distortion end. I recall its only plus being the ability to turn any amp into a metallic one.

I'd say your best bet with the pedal is to flatten the eq and lower the gain. Maybe don't just lower the gain and hit one chord, but lower it and play for several minutes. If that doesn't work, check out the FAB metal - you may be surprised what it can do if you haven't heard it yet...and for only like 15 bucks. It's a crime.

It's not a great pedal for sure, but you can get a few useable tones by following the settings Boss supplies.

Another tip: I found that it needs to go through a very clean amp where the pedal is producing the majority of the sound.

Example: on a Valvetronix I found it really sounded best though the clean boutique model. If I ran it through most of the other models, it sounded like crap (well worse then normal anyway.)

Another tip: Use it after another distortion pedal with the distortion at zero but maxing the level to boost you other dist pedal. With the ability to tweak the mids, bass, treble it acts as a eq in a way and boost the other pedal.

Again, check out the recommended settings Boss suggests, it's a good starting point.

But in the end it isn't a stage useable pedal. It's ok to mess around with in the house but I would never use it to impress anyone with the tone.

I got one and when went to Guitar Center I like it, but when I keep try to find a good tone in my house it really sound like crap... and now is an icon on the pedall board..

DankStar has a good description of settings. I have a Metal Zone, and i use it with my solid state and tube amps. One of my favorite settings on it is
everything at 10:30.
This way, the gain is not over-the-top, the mid Freq is focused on one of the harshest midrange tones, the mid Level is givving that frequency a little trim, the bass and treble knobs and trimmed a little, and the volume is set to a comfortable listening level.
My other favorite setting is the "Overdrive" setting described in the manual.

This is a good way to customize it for your own gear:

First dial in the amount of distortion you want. For me, this is usually minimum and always on the lower half. Then turn the bass and treble knobs all the way down. Now, with the mid level knob all the way up, sweep the mid freq knob back and forth until you hear the most unpleasant midrange tone. Now adjust the bass, treble, and mid level knobs to taste. When using a tube amp, I like to have all the knobs minimum, except crank the volume really high. It's not exactly a tone connosieur's setting, but it is a lot of fun.

I've heard it used as a preamp... And it sounded great like that.

Into a real amp it sounds pretty bad though.

Both sound amazing, are very versatile, particularly the TZ.

The trick with the MT2 to get it to sound good is to dial in a little less gain than you think you might need, put the volume up a little bit, and be very careful with the midrange control. DO NOT SCOOP YOUR MIDS. This is the fastest and most surest way to annoy other people with this pedal and to get you to not like it. I like a healthy amount of mids, focusing slightly on the upper mids.

If you're looking for a similar pedal but done better, I'd give the G2D Morpheous a look-see.
