Dear duncan fans...

As i wonder if there any good neck humbucker out there that can do decent cleans thats chimey, not overly bright and harsh, full bodied and has good definetion applicable for jazz music and funk...

Got to be able to get good blues tone when with gain up and not too boomy and undefine like the 59s.. and gotta be a nice pair up with my JB bridge ?

I also wonder if i can get a neck pickup install it without getting the "calibrated set" and still get good tone and compliments between neck and bridge when switched ?

Gotcha.... enuff said... i guess i be better off with the jazz neck... but can i getta Jazz neck to replace my current 59/JB set and wont sound odd ? I mean my current 59/JB is a stock and it should be a "calibrated set"?

So if i dump a jazz neck i got it individually to replace tge 59s will it be ok ?

Re: Good neck humbucker besides 59s and jazz ?

yes it will be fine. the jazz is less boomy on the low end than the 59 and matches well with the jb

Re: Good neck humbucker besides 59s and jazz ?

My favorites are the Pearly Gates n, APH-1 n and the Slash APH-2 n.

Of those three it's hard not to say: "Get a Slash APH-2n".

So I will.

Get a Slash APH-2n.

Re: Good neck humbucker besides 59s and jazz ?

Sentient's supposed to be Jazz/59-ish,from my understanding...

Wish they'd get the GD Hybrid neck sorted...

Will a APH-2N pair up nicely with my JB bridge ? Smooth change from bridge to neck ?

Is the Slash APH2N a clean application which excels well on cleans and good well define bass when overdriven but still fat enough for blues ?

When I switch to my bridge pickup I expect a little lift.

The APH-1 is said to be a Jazz with an A2 magnet.

The APH-2 is a slightly hotter version of the APH-1.

Haven't owned a JB in about 10 years, but I think the APH-2n would be an excellent choice.

If you don't love it, return it within 21 days and exchange it.

at that point, you have me thinking of a Seth Lover neck.

and now I don't know. it is really going depend a lot more on your goals and what you are looking for when in the neck position and in the middle position. I'm sorta wondering if a SNS neck might be an option, if you're wanting to stick with the Duncan brand.

I mean my current 59/JB is a stock and it should be a "calibrated set"?

meh. depends on your idea of a calibrated set. most commonly, people can think of "calibrated" as either nicely matched for volume when changing between pickups or nicely matched for voicing when changing between pickups. although the Jazz neck is packaged with the JB as a set and some companies use a 59 neck with a JB, I was never a big fan of the Jazz neck or the 59 neck with a JB. based on an artist recommendation, I've found that I like the 59 neck better as part of the 59 set. as for a nice match for the JB, you can always buy a brand new pickup and use the exchange policy for something else if your selection isn't working for you.

Re: Good neck humbucker besides 59s and jazz ?

Technically the JB/Jazz is the 'matched set' if we simply talk numbers/popularity.

But neither is a matched set, as the JB doesn't have a neck model, and both the Jazz and 59 have models for both positions.

But 'matched' is a marketing term more or less. It means nothing for how you like to play, or whether you will like the way the pickups interact.

The jazz is less boomy and more clinical than the 59, so it will have most of the qualities you want. And a mag swap to an A2 gives you the A2pro that Lew recommended if you want to try that out too (or vise versa).

Alex, I recommended the APH-2 because it's wound hotter than the APH-1.

There's not a huge diff between the APH-2 (7.92K) that I recommended and the APH-1 (7.6K), but there is a diff.

But the APH-1 is a favorite too, and if putting an alnico 2 magnet in a Jazz gets you an APH-1 maybe the Jazz would be a good call.

I know Seymour pairs the JB with a Jazz neck in his guitar.

I've never cared for the Jazz myself. But I've never cared for the JB either. ;)

Re: Good neck humbucker besides 59s and jazz ?

I have a Full Shred neck in my Jackson with the JB in the bridge. I think they sound great together. The FS neck isn't as boomy as the 59n and it sounds great under gain. The Jazz is good for clean cleans but I never liked it with much distortion.

Swap the filister screws on a Jazz with hex screws and you essentially have a Jazz/FS hybrid.

I still love the WLH neck pickup. That might be fun to try...

Surprised no one has mentioned the Screamin' Demon or the Distortion neck model.

Re: Good neck humbucker besides 59s and jazz ?

I need to start trying to find a more favorable neck pickup.. I love the WLH set. And historically I used to plug 59b models in most neck applications.. I still like them, but don't LOVE them. I also have Jazz in a few guitars and like the cleans, but they seem alittle timid to me when I switch to em for leads. The 59b's have the heat, but are alil dark. I used an AIIpro set years ago, but cant really remember the neck tone.. The bridge was way too weak.. I have a feeling a PG would sound good in a LP type, but I wonder about a 25.5 superstrat..

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack/derail...

Re: Good neck humbucker besides 59s and jazz ?

No problem there is merely a discussion here nothing is too serious for the fun of music :)
But just wonder has anybody tried putting a JB bridge onto the neck position ?

Good warm clean without getting too undefine ?

Re: Good neck humbucker besides 59s and jazz ?

^^
Distortion neck with an A4 magnet is even better. Thick but bright. I even like the stock Distortion neck, though it is a bit darker. Good for a brighter thinner sounding guitar.
