Good Non-Gibson LP-style alternative?

I've read and heard that the new Gibsons can have some inconsistencies in construction, fretwork given the price.

Can anyone recommend a LP-style alternative?

Thanks, Dave

Re: Good Non-Gibson LP-style alternative?

I've read fantastic things about both Heritage guitars and the Hamer Monaco. I haven't had occasion to play either though.

Re: Good Non-Gibson LP-style alternative?

The FDP raves about Agiles non stop. The Dean Evo looks pretty good too. Isnt it funny how the foreign guitars are becoming more consistant while some American co's are slacking off?

Re: Good Non-Gibson LP-style alternative?

Ones that consistently come up on this forum:

Hamer
Dean
PRS
Heritage

Actually, one of the nicest gats I've seen in progress on the board was made by Blueline...probably worth your while checking him out (one of the users here).

I'm sure he would custom make you a great alternative.

Re: Good Non-Gibson LP-style alternative?

USA made Hamer double cutaways are great guitars. Nice action and sustain. Nice looks.

Re: Good Non-Gibson LP-style alternative?

Gordon Smith Guitars (hand made in UK) make a good LP style guitar. Although I'm not sure if they're available in the USA yet :(

Re: Good Non-Gibson LP-style alternative?

Edwards ? :D

Take a look at japanese manufacturers.... Epi Elite, Edwards, japan Tokai... awesome !

Re: Good Non-Gibson LP-style alternative?

It's all about Heritage man. they are more Gibson than Gibson, literally! they are hand made les pauls by the old school gibson luthiers who didn't want to move when the company left kalamazoo. they make em the old way in the old gibson factory with the old equipment. they made my custom order (custom neck carve, custom pups, custom paint, custom woods) for about $1500 delivered. go to jay wolfe guitars on the web and check em out!

Try to contact Aaron Solomon (Blueline) he makes custom guitars. I am sure he can help you get a LP type of guitar. I used to have a Dean Evo special select and it was a great guitar. Great construction, nice details. as above mentioned Hamer, Heritage are also great guitars.

Re: Good Non-Gibson LP-style alternative?

Since I like LP's as well but don't like to play them because it is uncomfortable for me to play them. I asked Aaron to make a guitar that could have the LP's tone and sort of the SG capabilities as well so this is what I am getting:

Re: Good Non-Gibson LP-style alternative?

A clean used Hamer doesn't go for a lot of coin and still gets a lot of the LP flavor.

Re: Good Non-Gibson LP-style alternative?

If you like Gibson Les Pauls look around until you find the right one. There may be some inconsistencies from time to time but if you look you'll find plenty of excellent ones out there.

Otherwise I'd recommend looking at the higher quality Japanese market LPs.

Re: Good Non-Gibson LP-style alternative?

I'm a big Hamer Studio fan. If you can deal with the fact that it doesn't look like a Les Paul, it's a good choice. I was in the same boat as you...I was interested in a Les Paul, but even the 1970's models were going for $1200, and those are generally considered the least desireable Les Paul models. So I started looking at alternatives, and I ended up with a Hamer Studio. You'd be surprised how close it comes to sounding like a Les Paul. With the Rio Grande BBQ I have in the bridge, it has a wonderfully fat sound, the kind you would expect from a really good Les Paul. And the best part is that my Studio was well under $700. Check out www.hamerguitars.com, I think you'll really be impressed by their quality. I firmly believe that Hamer makes the highest quality guitars money can buy. Better than PRS, better than Fender, and way better than Gibson.

As others have mentioned, forum member Blueline is a guitar builder who does some amazing work. That might be worth looking into as well.

Great info guys-Thank you!

Ryan-was yours a Korean Hamer or USA? I've played the korean studio that a friend of mine owns-totally hot s-s-h setup. I've not seen a USA Hamer for that price.

I know Lew is a big Hamer fan as well. They're tough to beat that's for sure.

I'll have to get a hold of Blueline. Pureoldsound-That's a cool body style-can't wait to see the results.

Re: Good Non-Gibson LP-style alternative?

Have a guess what I am going to say??

Hamer (US) guitas rock - I have 4 of them and love them. If you want a real alternative get the Monaco Elite or as Ryan has said a Studio - you will be amazed at the quality and sheer tone out of them. Keep an eye out on e-bay and also over at the Hamer forum where there are some guys who sell them before putting them on e-bay. I would then say try and get a Tokai (MIJ) and other guitars that come from the land off the Rising sun. Shame not so long ago I sold my Tokai LS75Q which was an amazing guitar and put most LP standards to shame.

But as others have said why don't you ask Blueline or JohnJohn to make you that killer singlecut (or doublecut). Although I won't know what the actual charges I am sure that it is going to be a lot cheaper and better.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Mine is a '94 Hamer USA Studio in emerald Green. They routinely sell on Ebay for less than $700. Not the greatest pic, but you can see how beautiful the flame top and emerald green finish are.
