Good phaser pedals?

Re: Good phaser pedals?

I built a phase 90 clone from BYOC and it came out pretty **** well. If you're good with a soldering iron there's always that route.

Re: Good phaser pedals?

Capsule reviews for the attention-challenged.....

MXR Phase 90: Too much break-up with hot signal.
MXR Phase 100: Nice, swirly, versatile. Ugly. Recommended.
MXR EVH Phase 90: Handles hot signal, sounds like a wah.
Maxon PH350: Fabulous. Expensive.
Maxon PT-9Pro+: Weak, lame, not worth the money.
Maxon PT999: Dark and swirly, eats treble.
Ibanez PT9 (Vintage): Nice 8-stage phaser, can be tweaked. Recommended.
Ibanez BPL: Thin sounding, can't be tweaked enough.
Guyatone PH3: Sweep is too asymmetrical, but has a decent depth.
Boss PH-3: Digital sounding joke, kills your tone. Step is neat, though.
Boss PH-2: Wide, odd sounding phaser, kinda cool. Offers 12-step.
Boss PH-1r: Too sharp sounding for my tastes.
Digitech Hyper Phase: See Boss Ph-3.
EHX Small Stone: Good generic sound, reliability sucks.

Cheers,
M.

Re: Good phaser pedals?

Great reviews heymcz! Though I do disagree about the PH-3, it's a little complicated tweak-wise and most people don't have the patience to deal with it, so it gets tossed in the "suck" bin, which is unfair because it's a great pedal.

The PH-2 is king for me (phat phase sound in mode I and a flange like sound in mode II), I'm a huge fan of the Sovtek and EHX Small Stones (swirly and thick), and the current Dunlop Phase90 is good only if you find a good one (they're pretty much hit or miss).

I've been pleased with the Phase 90

I'm so glad that you're still using that thing! I always hear about it everytime someone brings up a "what's a good phaser?" or "show your pedalboard" topic! Good buy!

Very useful - thank you!
I didn't like the Phase 100 when I've tried it but it was 3 years ago, so tastes change.
I'll need to check out the EHX - if it works for me, I'll be happy... if not, I canalways tweak something out of a Boss or Ibanez (or go boutique)...

Re: Good phaser pedals?

I use an older Boss PH-1r--I think its the best of the Boss pedals I've heard.

I used to use the big, ol' clunky AC-powered Mutron Phasor--really good pedal, but big.

The MXR Phase 90 is still hard to beat. I think among the new ones, you have to get the EVH one to get the good tone.

And the really, really big Gibson Maestro 3-speed Phase Shifter is another vintage pedal with great sound--though I have found many of them to be noisy.

i use an old BOSS one as well... mine i figure is from 88/89 era.... the price is getting crazy on them

Re: Good phaser pedals?

I have a PH-3.. Cool features, but I find it steals some tone. I have ordered a TB pedal, and I hope it will solve that..

Re: Good phaser pedals?

Back in the 1970's I used to have the Phase 100, and quickly discovered that I much preferred the Phase 90. These sound very different; try before you buy.
