good pickups for power metal?

im building a neck thru rhoads v and i would like to hear some opinions on what would be a good bridge pickup to put into it, its going to be a maple neck with alder wings and an ebony fretboard (27 frets) i will be playing mostly dragonforce/sinergy/children of bodom/kotipelto/symphony x in this monster!

normally i use a x2n with an 10x gain booster switch in my guitars and it kills for metal of anykind, but i would like to try something else

Re: good pickups for power metal?

i think you should consider emgs possibly the 81... if you don't wanna go active the duncan distortion and jb do the job pretty well too with some tweakin.. what are you planning to put in the neck?

Re: good pickups for power metal?

from the duncans:
SH-4 JB model
SH-5 Custom
SH-6 Dustortion
SH-10 Full shred

all of them will do the job wonderfully

Re: good pickups for power metal?

I am currently using a authentic Bill Lawrence XL-500 with an emg SPC in a Jackson soloist and it is great!!! one of the best metal setups I have ever used, if not the best.

Re: good pickups for power metal?

I'm into that same style of music and I swear by the Distortion. I've got 8 of them in various guitars. It is the metal pickup of metal pickups.

Re: good pickups for power metal?

ill say dimebucker just cause absolutely everyone i know with an RR had a dimebucker in the bridge. im not even kidding

Re: good pickups for power metal?

My suggestion: Duncan Distortion, but don't rule out the dimebucker
Rock On :smoker:

Re: good pickups for power metal?

thanks for the suggestions guys, and like alexi i will not be using a neck pickup, no need for it with how i play my metal leads, and this is strictly a metal guitar!

Alexi from C.O.B. uses an EMG HZ-H4... he claims the 81 is too hot :saeek:

I have just replaced my HZ-H4 with a JB.
I must say that the JB is a lot better: much more sustain and harmonics.
The tone is 'better' too (for me): more warmth and high mids.

But: one man's garbage is another mans treasure!

Re: good pickups for power metal?

I think a Dimebucker, Duncan Distortion, Bill Lawrence, or Joe Barden full size HB, will all work just fine for power metal.

Re: good pickups for power metal?

I got a DD so we will see how it works out, if i dont like it i will just switch it for a dimebucker or something like that

Good choice. Keep us posted, and put up some clips, even if you decide you don't like the pup!!
