Good strat match for '78 model?

Hi

I just played an old ESP strat with the '78 model, and i am sooo getting that pickup. I think it's the most responsive vintage style humbucker i ever played.

I want to put it in my 62 american vintage, and i am thinkin' pairing it with two surfers ants i have been storing. They are neck and custom bridge, but maybe i'll just put the bridge in middle position and see how it works out. I rarely play the middle position anyway.

Any thoughts on this setup before i install it? Any other suggestions would be very helpful.

Thx

Hmmm, the 78 model and two surfer ants

Nah that must suck :)

Does the 62 vintage have a humbucker route?

Re: Good strat match for '78 model?

OK

See that's why i'm asking :nervous:

I'm not very well known in the pickup world as of yet. Just tired of stock pickups, and i have had these surfers lying around.

I saw somebody in here paired a 78 model with two ssl-2

I have my 59 with the Texas Hots, and i'm basically looking for vintage tone, and more output and versatility in my other strat.

And no, it is not routed, but i will soon see to that :approve:

A side note here.

Be sure this is truly what you want to do. I took a similar approach 20 years ago...and 10 years after that I found myself putting the single coil back in. If I was to do this today, I would try to find a HSS routed Strat body, move all the parts to it instead and leave my '62 Vintage body in the original condition.

Re: Good strat match for '78 model?

Well i'm fairly certain i'm gonna go ahead with it.

I've got a single coil strat i'm perfectly happy with, and i don't see the point of having two. I guess i'm a little minimalistic that way. I don't really want more than 3 or 4 guitars.

Besides, the routing isn't really that much of an alteration, i could just put single coils in it after its routed and it wouldn't make that much of a difference.

Any comments on the SSL-2 combo, anyone?

I think he's talking about a newish 62 reissue model, not a real '62, right?

Correct, it is not a real vintage guitar. It's fenders american vintage series. The 62 model.

I wouldn't consider routing a vintage guitar like that :eyecrazy:

Thats me, and I love it. My absolute favorite setup ever. I can do almost anything with that guitar and love while I'm at it. The SSL-2's pair up great with the 78 and the middle/bridge notch gives me quack I love, that I never got from any of my single coil setups. Order a trem spaced parchment one and will look awesome in that axe.

Re: Good strat match for '78 model?

Nice looking one. I'd buy the same thing if it didn't have the C shape neck.

Anyway, please tell me you have a white '78 for it.

That axe just begs for black Quarter Pounders, and plack knobs too. But, for heavens sake, no '78 or other bucker in that beauty!
that's IMO, of course, but I'd get another axe and load it with bucker.

Re: Good strat match for '78 model?

the new reissue vintage will one day be vintage guitars as well ...DONT ROUTE IT
buy a humbucker equipped guitar
or better yet build/make one yourself.

i know someday will never come

I think i'm gonna try that combo and see if i like it. I don't know about a cream colored bucker, though. I've never been too keen on those.

I'm thinkin zebra :smokin:

Re: Good strat match for '78 model?

I doubt that a humbucker route will screw up the sound of the guitar, that should be fine. I'd get a new pickguard, of course, so that if you want to sell the axe you just slam on the original guard.

BTW, can somebody explain to me why a 78 sold on Ebay for more than the new price? Two-conductor, too
