Got A Chance To Crank Through The 4x12 W/The Vox Head.

Everyone in my house was out today so I set my Vox Valvetronix 120VTH on the 60wx60w settings and really rip through the amp and 4x12 V30 Marshall cabinet...

Gotta say this now about this amp...It totally rocks through this cab and the Marshall "Plexi" JCM800,Soldano,and Dumble OD tones absolutely sound fantastic once you get some air moving..

The "Plexi" tone has that nice subtle grind with my strat and has alot of lowend thump and the mids are great now as they should be...The 800 tones are cool with that different preamp grind and stays tight and ballsy..

The Vox AC30 and AC30TBX tones lack the lowend girth of the Marshall tones,but you get that great smooth class A overdrive when you dial up the gain and you also get the nice jangle on top...

Lastly..The Dumble and the Soldano SLO100 settings are pure singing,Santana-like tones...Notes fly off the guitar with the Dumble settings especially..

Now I'm extremely happy after hearing the amp loud through my cab...I was at or near gig and practice levels....Very impressed with this head...

I played for 2 hours straight...At 1 point while I was playing,I had this cool experience that came over me while I was playing...It was a feeling of the hairs on my back standing up and this cool euphoric feeling you get when your playing and your guitar and amp are all really sounding great..I had this happen to me today and it doesn't happen often...What a great amp this thing is,and for $600...

You have to make sure that you also get to crank this amp up,but having a great cab to plug into helps also...The 4x12 was just great today,really moving some air and I was getting clarity of notes and singing controllable feedback with both the Soldano and Dumble settings...I felt and sounded like Warren Haynes at times and Santana.... :13:

The 2 Marshall settings were really great also....Tight,crunchy,clear,and with nice mids and plenty of lowend..Guess you could say I was happy today... :dance:

lol.....That depends? Nothing is better then great sex,but sometimes guitar playing gets pretty close... :laugh2:

I'm really having alot of fun with this amp! It's great..The Vox tones were great also.Very inspiring..

That's exactly why I've been urging Valvetronix users to buy the head version and use it with a high quality cab. One of the major things that turns tube snobs away from these amps is the fact that they're hearing it plugged into crappy particle board cabs that most modeling amp companies use. Once you give it the same benefit that most tube amps have (birch-ply cab), you begin to level the playing field. It'll always lack the EXACT qualities that a good tube amp has, but not enough to make you not like it.
I use my AD60 head on a straight Marshall Jubilee cab with Vin 30's on top and G-75's on the bottom at home as my practice amp. It sounds like overkill for a practice setup, but with the variable wattage, I can sound like I'm playing Madison Square Gardens without the neighbors even hearing it.The Marshall and Highgain tones are perfect. Like you noted, the cleaner models take on a more ballsy character.

I've always been a tube amp snob(Still own all of my vintage tube amps)...This thing is absolutely inspiring and capable of amazing tones at $600.....The feel is close enough,but it's the sheer versatility and the fun of creating tones,adding a pedal effect,adding delay,chorus,reverb etc to an already great tone...Some of the models are incredibly "vibeish"...I've played through most of the amps in this Vox except for the 2 Dumble models...I really like this thing alot and it has given me several hours of fun and I'm learning alot with it ALSO....Great stuff...

Hey Stratdeluxer. I think I recall you saying you are using the FS4 foot board, what is your opinion of this unit compared to the FS12? Have you experienced any delay in channel switching? I read a bad review somewhere but you know what they say about reviews (kind of like opinions). The extra expression pedal would be nice and they have a FS12 in stock at the local Sam Ash. (with Vox that seems to be half the battle). Enjoy that Valvetronics. Scott.

I am using the FC4,have had no problems with it...I didn't need to spend the extra money on the FC12,because I already have my own Vox wah(Actually 4 wahs)...I use an Ernie Ball volume pedal connected to the FC4 for my overall master volume control and the expression pedal to control an effect....I only use the FC to add and subtract my effects from any one preset at a time...I don't switch presets..I also use pedals,so if I'm playing clean and need overdrive or distortion,I just stomp one of my own modded effects pedals...The FC4 also fits on my already made pedal board.The FC12 is too big and is un-needed overkill and too expensive for my needs....So far I've had no problems with the amp or the FC4....The amp sounds really great through my Marshall V30 4x12!

You will soon find out that it was well worth the wait! Hang in there brother.
What a major difference a great closed back cabinet makes...I may have to try out the matching Vox 2x12 cab cause I'd still prefer just a 2x12 at our gigs,plus it saves my back.

My dumbass friend bought the head AND cabinet for it... I sounds *OK*. You can kind of get the feel and idea of the different amp types... but it sounds muffled like there's a pillow in front of the speakers. I played one at guitar center and it was the same. Gearjoneser is probably right about the cabinet...

Anyway, sounds like fun... glad you like your toy.

Same amp,but the 60 watter is mono and the 120 watter is stereo...Maybe the stereo is more dimensional sounding? I had the mindset that the 120watter would have more headroom,plus sometimes bigger is better and the price wasn't that much more on the 120 watter..

And yes....The 120 watt head sounds absolutely great through the AV V30 cabinet,especially the Marshall tones which sucked through my open cabinet..I'm compromising my clean tones a bit,but I Like this tradeoff better,simply because most of the stuff we do is heavier sounding....

You could always purchase the head and take advantage of the 45 day trial period? If it isn't the amp for you,return it? That's what I did,except I'm keeping mine,plus I bought a pretty cover for her and the FC4 controller...I Like this amp alot..As you know by now. :dance:

Corey....Are you saying that the seperate Vox matching 2x12 cab sounds muffled? Maybe I should just stick with the Marshall V30 4x12 I'm running it into?

Thanks for the kind words buddy...Let me say this though....The amp is terrific through the right cabinet...I thought I was going to have to return it after trying it through my open back Cyber Twin 2x12 cabinet...Quite a few forum members told me to try the 4x12 and when I finally did,it was like.."YEAH" that'll work...All of the heavier amp models grind nicely and the V30s get the mids to cut better and with a nice lowend that works for our classic rock/blues styles..The V30 cab is a loud cab though and that may create some other problems?

After I pay off the head and FC,I'd like to see if I could still get a nice 2x12 for this amp...Maybe other Valvetronix head owners will be able to help me before then with their trial runs on different cabs?

For the price,this head is well worth checking out...Turn some knobs and get both the master and gain controls up around 5 or better...Add some reverb or add reverb and some slight delay etc..and have a blast..Very easy and intuitive to learn quickly on.. :dance:
