Re: Got a new Tele!

AP2... some people swear by them, but I've never heard them with a Tele. I bought an Antiquity/Blues Special combo from you a while back. Killer stuff. ALSO, can you try an SM3 in the neck position?

Re: Got a new Tele!

How is the neck slot routed on the JB Tele? I figured it was a vintage route, but many of the current American and MiM Teles are routed for a HB at the neck.

I can vouch for the SM-3 Seymourized mini-HB in the neck of a Tele (ash body, 1-pc maple neck). It is very full sounding, some of the compressed HB tone, but also a good dose of that hollow single coil neck tone. Good pinched harmonics. It is generally very clear and warm sounding clean or overdriven, although I suppose it could still get muddy under some circumstances. I have my SM-3n paired with a Fender CS Nocaster bridge pickup (7.1 K), and the Nocaster has just enough juice to keep up. The combination in the middle switch setting is excellent. The SM-3 also seems to cancel a bit of the Nocaster bridge pickup hum in the middle position.

I think it's routed for a HUMBUCKER! But the stock Tele neck pickup neck fits right in there too. Lew

Re: Got a new Tele!

I would love to hear some antiquity set sound clips.
(Because i'm eventually gonna get a tele with a broadcater/antiquity)

Yes...the Antiquitys are probably going in there soon. I want to hear both the Antiquitys and Fender Custom Shop Nocaster pickups in this guitar and compare them to the Fralin Blues Specials, so both sets will probably go in this guitar eventually. Lew

Hi Lew,

I've just sent you an e-mail saying pretty much what I'm about to ask so disregard it if you read this first...

Have you fitted the antiquities yet and how do they compare with the Fralins?

I am contemplating treating my 52 RI Tele to new pickups and Fralins or Antiquities are top of my list. I own a THD Flexi amp, and upon speaking with the amps designer he said that one of the guitars used to voice the amp was a vintage Tele with stock fralin replacement pickups and recommended them highly.

Obviously many people have said that Fralins are the best out there but I have also heard a couple of people say that when they put Fralins in their 52 RI, it didn't make much of an improvement or even that they were too clear and rather sterile. Even though I have tried neither I have a gut feeling that the Antiquities will be more suitable.

Currently my Tele copes very well in covering a variety of styles (I often play quite heavy rock) although I find the bridge in particular to be somewhat harsh. I don't think I want an overwound pickup (my experience with these in strat-style guitars has not been good) as I like to be able clean up on the guitars volume which I find works less well with hot pickups. However, I have no idea how hot the stock pickup in the 52 RI is. Could you perhaps give an opinion based on what I have told you? Unfortunately, tracking pickups down in the UK (especially Fralins) is not easy and most shops seem unwilling to give trial periods.

Do you ship to the UK? Finally, have you ever tried the four-way switch mod for a Tele? This is something I have definitely been contemplating doing and am interested to hear whether you think it’s worth it. Thank you for any help you can give me,

Regards,

Pete

Re: Got a new Tele!

i have a couple of those 4 way tele switches and i really like em. the series option is very nice especially when you dont use many pedals and want some extra grunt

Thanks man, that's exactly how I would use it. Seems like a bit of a no-brainer especially since it doesn't affect any of the regular three tones...makes you wonder why more people don't use them!

Re: Got a new Tele!

not quite sure. i actually used my first one up about a month ago. it was in my #1 strat (jap neck, american body, mccarty hard tail bridge, grover tuners, neck and bridge classic stacks that used to be virtual2's with the clapton mid boost and tbx tone) and the switch finally started getting a little crusty after about 8 years and lord knows how much sweat and other liquid that got in there
