Bruce got it for me. You plug it in between the amp and the speaker and it's like a power soak. Let's me crank my Marshall but keep the volume down to non-eardamaging levels. It's pretty cool! Reminds me of the tone I hear on early Van Halen albums where he was using the Variac. Kind of thick and warm and buzzy...in a good way. Very harmonically alive and makes getting pinch harmonics easy...much more so than any master volume amps I've owned. I'll post more over the next week or so as I get to know how to use it better. Lew

Very nice. I've been thinking of getting one for my Hot Rod Deluxe so I don't need earplugs anymore...they ruin all the treble. When you say buzzy, is it more buzzy than it would be if you cranked it without the Mass, or just naturally buzzy (i.e. does it add any crap to the sound)?

Re: Got a Weber Mass for Christmas!

Wow, looking at their site, the prices are much lower for one of these than for say a THD attenuator... keep us posted Lew, I'm interested :).

Re: Got a Weber Mass for Christmas!

Fretfire, you're right....you can get a fully loaded MASS with all the accessories for less than the THD. The main thing I like about the MASS is the switchable impedence(2/4/8/16 ohms). The THD is set, so if you switch cabs, you need another Hotplate.

Re: Got a Weber Mass for Christmas!

I have dug mine for 2 years now. I can't say I hear any added buzz with mine. I am usually 3 or higher with it, so perhaps lower settings bring it on. Nice gift!

Damn!

Re: Got a Weber Mass for Christmas!

Interesting, I'm reading about the DI capabilities of the Mass. Am I correct to assume that you can run the DI signal straight into a mixer or PC recording interface?

Re: Got a Weber Mass for Christmas!

I second your findings! I just bought one for my rectoverb, it's really a good buy. It makes pinch harmonics way easier, and definately makes it sound like a CRANKED head. Mine has a switchable 8 to 16 ohm load. It was only like $150 new.

Re: Got a Weber Mass for Christmas!

Cool man. This thing is very appealing, I may have to scrape some pennies together.

Re: Got a Weber Mass for Christmas!

Had a good time playing through the Mass yesterday. Mostly with my Deluxe Reverb cranked and the Mass set to around 2 or 3. I'm really looking forard to trying it with my '70 Marshall 50 watt model 1987 head though...I never play that amp...it's to loud!

I didn't mean that the Mass created BUZZ...that would be incorrect.

I only meant that the distortion characteristics had a fat, fuzzy tone quality to it that reminded me a little of big bee buzzing around. It's a cool tone and I'm enjoying it very much.

When I turn my guitars volume down the cleaner rythym tones are great too, so the Mass is not really a buzzy sounding device at all...I was sort of kidding about the Buzz thing.

I guess I was thinking of that old Ventures tune, the 2000 Pound Bee, but mostly as a joke! One of the first uses of distortion or fuzz on a record album, BTW.

Much more pleasing and more natural overdrive than any of the master volume amps I've owned.

But the Mass is not Buzzy at all....not in a noisy or 60 cycle humming kind of way.

Sorry for not being more clear in my original description.

No worries Lew. Have you messed with the DI at all? I'm curious about how effective the tone stack actually is...

No I have not. I need to get some modern recording gear someday and give it a try. All I have for a recorder is one of those original Tascam 4 track cassette decks from 10 years ago or so... Lew

Ahh I see. Well that's good then.

Damn, now I want one! :32:

Re: Got a Weber Mass for Christmas!

Nice score Lew.....Enjoy it...I've had my eyes on that Mass product since it came out,but I use effects through my Marshall at lower volumes...I had the Marshall Powerbrake but I didn't like it and sold it...That Mass looks like a great unit to have in front of my own loud 50 watt Marshall...

Re: Got a Weber Mass for Christmas!

Lew, would you say that buying one is worth the money or worth passing on?
