Got any favorite DS-1 mods to share?

Re: Got any favorite DS-1 mods to share?

Just changing the clipping Diodes to LEDs makes a HUGH! Differance IMO.

Re: Got any favorite DS-1 mods to share?

Changed a few caps to higher quality, removed the 4148 diodes and used four germanium diodes instead, changed the pots to 500Kohm on the distortion pot, a 25Kohm on the tone pot, and 500 Kohm on the volume pot, used small Alpha pots.
Sorry about the blurry pic.

And a clip as well.

Leave it to Niels to always have a clip. ;) I so need to get some Ge diodes.
I'm not done with mine. I want to get a little more midrange out of it. I think lowering R16 will do that.

Hey Erik, Rid (or anyone) Rid's clip is great! I love the tone overall. I just got a Taiwan for $25. I know it sounds ridiculous to say I want to "preserve" the DS-1 stock tone, because it is so cheap sounding. But it seems like Rid's clips made it overdrive more like an amp. The sound is "ampy" to me. (Don't know the recording method) But I already have plenty of TS/OD style boxes, and I don't want a JCM in a box, or a Sansamp, Burn Unit, or anything that's designed to overdrive like an amplifier. I actually want the DS-1 to sound all square waved and crunchy, even with a little of that white noise type of sizzle sound. So I don't necessarily want to warm up the distortion to a JCM800 level if that makes any sense.

Which parts of the Erik (Keely/Melanhead hybrid) should I keep and which should I leave out? Should I leave the diodes but replace the caps/resistors? I don't want to transform the pedal, I just want to make it more professional, maybe add more usability to the tone knob, which seems only usable between zero and 12:00. After 12:00 it becomes some kind of thin, phasey hollow sound, and I'd rather it got more sizzly and harmonically active.

Sorry for the meaty questions, I'm sure I need to go to a pedal forum and research, but I just got it yesterday, and you guys seem like you've done the homework.

What's a good source for GE diodes. I doubt that rat-shak carries them...

Re: Got any favorite DS-1 mods to share?

also, whats your method for getting that crusty glue they put on, covering multiple components?

Re: Got any favorite DS-1 mods to share?

Frank, try swapping one of the diodes, D4 or D4 for a red 3mm LED. That will add some crunch in there. You can also increase the input cap value to allow some more lows in there. As for the tone knob, I think R17 will affect that in conjunction with C12.

Gr8Scott, Small Bear Electronics is good place for all the components needed.

Fresno Bob, to get the goop off, you need some small tweezers and lots of patience. Carefully peel it off. It wouldn't hurt to heat it up a little with a hairdryer either while removing it.
