Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

I mostly listen to really good old bands and nothing else, like Miles Davis, The Beatles, Black Sabbath etc.. I'm just bored by current music, it's all so simple and monotonous and boring to me, and I can't find anything that's interesting! I'm into a huge range of music (blues, jazz, funk, metal, punk, rock & roll, fusion, electronic stuff, whatever!), I'm just looking for anything that's good and different. I can't really tell what I'll like. I'm not opposed to simple stuff, and love the Sex Pistols and lots of other old Punk bands. I'm not opposed to heavy stuff, and love Children of Bodom. I'm not opposed to electronic stuff, and like bands like Mindless Self Indulgence and Gorillaz. I even listen to rap, like tupac, snoop, method man and nwa. I'm pretty much open to anything but pop-punk.

So if you make, or know of, any good music that's out there, that's weird, that's under-appreciated, that's experimental, that's ahead of it's time, please, share it with me!

Well here's some of the "newer" stuff I've been listening to:

1) Wilco- Best band around in my opinion
2) Franz Ferdinand- Great old school Clash like jams.
3) TV On The Radio- A little weird but worth a listen. Slowdive meets Peter Gabriel.
4) The Streets- British Rapper who sounds like he recorded this album in his basement, but still kind of interesting.
5)Boards Of Canada- Weird Electronic Music that fuses cool beats and weird audio samples.

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

sonic youth - noise punk in early 80's, middle stuff more normal stuff, newer stuff I've heard has had a real classic rock vibe
jawbreaker - great emocore band, pretty much punk only with more flavour and colour
don caballero - don't know what genre, bass guitar drums doing complicated stuff
melvins - sludge band
deathcab for cutie - first album (something about airplanes) is a great indie rock album
slint - inspired a lot of mathrock and college bands in the early 90's, spiderland is the best album
kitchens and bathrooms - good mathrock band
dntel - electronicasomething
built to spill - velvet undergroundish at times, borrowed from fugazi
fugazi - came out of rites of spring and embrace, interesting band but I don't like them
modest mouse - good following, I don't like them but they're different, tour with b2s and fugazi
husker du - 80's hardcore band, started emo, interesting stuff but a variety of sounds, formed embrace
indian summer - emo / screamo early 90's I like
jets to brazil - black from jawbreaker formed it, some good stuff, pretty much rock
god speed! you black emperor - brilliant stuff, not rock, atmospheric, almost soundscapes, but instrumental
agoraphobic nosebleed - heaviest most brutal music I've heard
carnal forge - metal
pig destroyer - up there with agoraphobic nosebleed
meshuggah - really interesting metal band, very mathy and heavy, favorite song is "pulling straws at random"
bandits of the accoustic revolution - accoustic project of catch 22
helmet - check them out since you like black sabbath
circle of energy - good band that someone's in on this site or HC
the postman syndrome - same as above
moneen - have their own sound, poppy and twinkly, not every song is a hit but I like them www.moneen.org
ictus - project of some guy, www.purevolume.com/ictus, not the best but the song slit on his website I really like
tortoise - came out of slint, haven't listened to them in a while actually, remind me of don caballero
mogwai - haven't listened to them in a while but remember liking them, is different
sigur ros - icelandic group, definately different, like bjork kinda
rachel's - chamber music kinda
at the drive in, cursive, the mars volta - three bands which have a big following and are basically progressive rock, mars volta makes me think of santana, I can't really get into them but a lot of people do
centromatic - good indie rock band, members went on to form cursive
burning airlines - have a few tracks by them, interesting stuff but rock
idaho - don't have much information on them, just a few recordings, good stuff, spacey rock
penfold - post emo indie rock kinda, vocals are kinda weak but the songs make up for it
three mile pilot - don't know how to describe them, indie rock doesn't really say anything
low - great great band, just check them out.... variety of instruments and genres, a lot of it is very mellow and dark

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

frank zappa, he might be famous for being controversial and extremly suggestive songs in which he sings but, just like to his album "shut up and play guitar" and u'll figure out the other reason why he is a guitar god.And as john5959 already mentioned i posted up a video of kaki king who's a awesome and very original musician.

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

simply the most unusual instrumental group that is really awesome are the (dixie) DREGGS.

fusion, jazz, country, metal rolled into one. all great musicians. very unpredictable styles from song to song. i listen to them while driving alot. i always have to keep my eye on the speedometer because they get me going 75-85 mph when they are kicking it.

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

the dregs are one of my fav bands...also check out the steve morse band.

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

uh i think modest mouse is pretty underrated. i duno how much u guys listen to them, but the more i hear, the more i love. they are so funky and simple and rockin. yeah, they just hit MTV so all the preps at my school are into "float on" but i think its just cuz of MTV. anyways, i think they are pretty underrated.

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

Coil- http://www.brainwashed.com/coil/

This is the most experimental stuff I've ever heard. They are probably second only to Throbbing Gristle in terms of influence on industrial/electronica. A lot of people say that bands like Aphex Twin would not exist if it wasn't for Coil. Check out Scatology, Horse Rotovator, and Love's Secret Domain.

Lacuna Coil- http://www.lacunacoil.it/

No relation to Coil. :laugh2: This is a band that I just recently discovered. I don't know exactly how to desribe their music, but I love it!

"Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" is pretty much their consensus seminal album. I love that album. "A.M." (their debut) is a bunch of nice country-rock tunes, "Being There" shows them growing by leaps and bounds, and "Summerteeth" has both great tunes and nice experimentation, but it can get bogged down in overly-dense production. "A Ghost Is Born" (newest one) is growing on me. But I think YHF is their best to date.

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

well, you want something cool. listen to lyrics born (www.lyricsborn.com). i normally hate rap/hip hop, but this guy is amazing. just straight up good stuff. do check it out.

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

Enon
Tv On The Radio
Fischerspooner (electro)
Unearth (metal)
Auf Der Maur
HIM
The Killers
Sparta's new album is pretty cool too.

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

check out wes montgomery, as a gtr player I really think you'll dig him. Jaco pastorius. Grant green. chick correa/al dimeola, jeff beck, chili peppers (blood sugar sex magik), INDIAN MUSIC the SITAR is an amazing instrument-----> ravi shankar. Charlie parker, theolonius monk. lot's of blue note label stuff (jazz). A great 70's alternative hit was sugarloaf-green eyed lady

I seriously dig wes, miles, ravi, and grant. The stuff that hits people the best though is sugarloaf- green eyed lady, wes montgomery, grant green and the chilli peppers BSSM album

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

also my all time favorite song is machine gun by jimi hendrix live @ filmore east, but not the one that's on the album, it's from the other show he did at filmore east. it's about 14 minutes long and the song's climax is like 4 minutes long just before the end.

If it starts out like ".......soldiers in vietnam, milwaukee....oh yeah and vietnam" then it's NOT the performance I'm suggesting.

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

to finish it off I'll give you specifics to search for and d/load.

wes mongomery- insensatez (mellow)
return to forever- sorceress (fusion)
grant green- ain't it funky now (jazz w/ great guitar riffs to copy/learn)
wes montgomery- incredible jazz guitar (type that in as a search "incredible...." is an album with great stuff)
John coltrane and johnny hartman- lush life (jazz with typical drums and good improv)
Al dimeola?- midnight tango (fusion)
Jeff Beck- "blow by blow" (more fusion it's an album)

I like a lot of fusion and alt jazz, two of the most underrated musics in western style.

Re: Got any music that's DIFFERENT?

Ima Robot---super indie! The best indie band, in my opinion.
The Datsuns---like a more AC/DC and Thin Lizzy inspired Darkness
Blood Brothers---sounds like he's on helium!
Sahara Hotnights---coming from me, you had it coming ;) :)

I know Unearth, they're good. A friend's fiance works at a radio station and he gave me a copy of their 4 song demo some time ago.
