Got my Custom 5 installed!

Installed a Custom 5 in my Schecter PT, replacing a JB. The Custom 5 is so much better for me. The cleans are just what I was looking for. THe JB's midrange spike just didn't gel with me on cleans. I don't have time to do a full test until Sunday. Have to move my son's junk out tohis new apartment.

The Custom 5 so far is what I was wanting! :unitedsta

Re: Got my Custom 5 installed!

I've been doing a lot of research on the Custom 5. I turned a CC into a Custom 5 and so far I like it a lot in my McCarty. I haven't had a chance to gig or rehearse with the group yet, so that'll be the real test for me.

Let us know your thoughts after your full test.

Son moving out = more room for musical gear?

Re: Got my Custom 5 installed!

roll back your volume a tad and the cleans get alot better...

sometimes i roll back the bridge volume to 8 in my sg and it sounds alot like a 59.

Re: Got my Custom 5 installed!

The Custom 5 is one of my all time favorite Tele bridge pups. Nice, behaved twang with some girth. I bet she's killer in that PT.

The description "scooped" always plagues that pickup and gives people the wrong idea.
I wish the parrots would shut up for once. LOL

The C5 is one of the best sounding pickups in the Duncan line. It has the same EQ curve that you usually adjust on your stereo's graphic EQ, so it can't be that bad!

Second that!!!

I was about to sell my Paul becasue I couldn't find a pickup that made it sound like it should and the C-5 saved me. It's perfect for a Les Paul!

Absolutely. I've gone through a lot of pickups in LP's, and for me, it's the one.

There's a few others though too. If you like vintage output...the 59B. If you like warm textural vintage, the Seth. If you want pure rock, the C5, but if you'd like it backed down a tiny bit, the Brobucker or 59/C5 hybrid.
If you want your LP for pure heaviness and metal, the Custom. Any hotter than that, and it starts compressing and mudding out......probably due to the short scale length of a LP.

I dont know GJ, I have a Distortion set in a LP and its pretty wicked sounding.

I played a JB in a LP last week and I liked that a lot too. Not enough to change out my C5 but I liked it.

Re: Got my Custom 5 installed!

C5 saved my LPC from being sold also. I also dont hear the mid-scooped tones other people talk about . My curernt setup is a Gibson LPC all mohagany with C5 & APH5 neck through a Soldano . Love it !

Re: Got my Custom 5 installed!

Just got done running the C5 through it's paces. It's GREAT! Very touch sensitive where the JB was not. Nice presence and top end, might be too bright for some but I like it. The bass wasn't boomy at all, sounds good to me. I'm happy with this pickup. The JB had a thicker sound on distortion which is why it's popular but the C5 really shines on articulation and tone for me.

Re: Got my Custom 5 installed!

Very cool. I just got done with "a little loud for at home" test too. Tight lows and good highs without being piercing. I had tried the Pearly Gates bridge, but the very high presence was too much and there weren't enough lows. By the time I re-EQ'd, the neck tone was awry.

Seemed like good mids to me. Looks like we both found a winner.

Re: Got my Custom 5 installed!

Very kewl to hear Bro! The C5, IMO, is a great pup!! back in the day, everyone was custom making them with magnet swaps and loving them.. Now, as Gearjonser said, it seems every one is parroting negativity about them.. In the right guitar, there is nothing better..

Glad you like it! Rock on!

Re: Got my Custom 5 installed!

I guess the negative would be for some heavy rockers/metal heads that the C5 is thinner than a JB in the mids. The JB does do that very well, a nice thick midrange grind on distortion without losing the highs. Clean, the JB is muffled and woofy to me. The C5 is clear and wonderful for cleans.

I'd say it's got more neutral mids than scooped, but it depends what guitar it's in. The C5 sounded a little mid-scooped in my alder Charvel Star with bolt-on maple/maple neck, so I swapped it out for a Tone Zone and am happier.
I've got a Hamer Special FM with a C5 in the bridge (mahogany body and set neck, 3/8" maple top), and it sounds great, nice and full.

Re: Got my Custom 5 installed!

The C5 is one of my favourites! I liked it in my superstrats and I'm a hard rocker/metalhead. ;) It does its job even better when the guitar provides the low mid section of the spectrum itself. The pickup has a nice presence and fills out the sound. That's why I moved to a low-mid heavy pickup, but the C5 remains one of my favourites. I agree about the sick clarity it has. The other three all-time favourites of mine next to it are the L500XL, the VHPAF and the BK Holydiver. Then the Demon has a very nice tone also.

Re: Got my Custom 5 installed!

always hated that "scooped" description after i actually got it...its more "open" then scooped. when i hear the term scooped, i think nu-metal...when i hear the C5 i think....this is what aerosmith, zeppelin, and ac/dc would sound like if they played through my boogie, lol!!

Re: Got my Custom 5 installed!

Yeah, more open sounding that the JB. The JB is creamier on distortion but bleh on cleans. The C5 works so much better for me.
